My Yamar 2002 runs great up to 2100 RPM, no smoke and smooth. When given more throttle it gives more smoke,RPM drops, and it runs rough. When in neutral RPM can go to 3400 no smoke and smooth. Whats my problem?

Injectors?

It seems to be something related to putting a load on the engine. Is your shaft rotating freely? Any noise coming from shaft while engine is engaged? How agressively do you apply throttle when in gear?

Richard,

Sounds like a drive line problem. Check to prop for growth and folwing, the cutlass for binding and make sure the trans has oil. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com

Havce you added a high output alternator?

Also try rebleeding the fuel system. If tis doesn't work check the drive shaft for binding. Stuffing box too tight? Prop fouled? Exhaust elbow plugged? Temporarly remove the air filter and see if the problem still continues.

Had the same problem on 320

Replaced air and fuel filter and water separator filter. Confirmed clean prop and exaust elbow free of soot. Topped tank off with fresh fuel. The problem is finally getting corrected. Boats have to be used and this one was laid up for 6 months as not to disturb anchors deployed for hurricane season. I think it was a combination of dirty air filter and old fuel (less than 1/2 tank). Start with basics, a fouled prop will cause you to overfuel the engine and create black smoke. Strong seas or current will create the same effect as a fouled prop. Your problem is with load, find the source; dirty hull, fouled prop, bad transmission, too tight packing gland. let us know the outcome. Good luck.

Thanks for your kind response!

I was getting ready to pull the exhaust elbow, but first talked to a mechanic. He said before you do that make sure sea water is flowing strong and clean air filter, don't just look at it. So I took the sea water return hose off the elbow and ran the motor with a bucket catching the water. I also cleaned the air filter with soap and hot water, It was dirty! Put it back together and it runs great. I don't know which problem fixed it maybe both. A story with a happy ending!
