3000 RPM?

I just bought a H30T 1992 with a 2GM20 and standard 2 blade. I understand it was regularly maintained (?) but I am only getting 3000RPM max (manual says 3600 top). Otherwise it seems to run OK. Any hints on where to start to improve this.

Dirty Prop

For comparison the 2GM20F on my 30T (1991) drives a three blade 15x10 prop and has never been able to get over 3400. I reqularly cruise at 2750. Several times this summer it has refused to get over 2800 and each time it was merely a dirty prop. Don't know about other parts of the country but this time of year in San Diego the bay water is warm and I must clean prop at least every three weeks or I get lots of black smoke if I try to go above 2800. So start with the simple things and make sure your prop is clean.

Thanks Roy!

Good idea, I'll keep that in mind. We have lots of weed floating this time of year. Might be it?? BZ

You did not mention..

Bruce: You did not mention if it will rev to 3400-3600 in neutral or not. If it will rev in neutral then you may have different problems. Obvious you need to check the prop and bottom condition. Being that you just bought the boat, I must assume that the bottom is fairly clean. If the problem is NOT the prop, then you should check your mixing elbow. The elbow can cause an exhaust restriction which will limit your RPMs. It can also cause overheating too.

ditto

I had the same problem and I cleaned the prop and I now get 3600 under power with my 290 same engine.
