I have the 5416 diesel in a 1984 O'day. the oil filters are nuts expensive. Anyone know of an alternative filter, off the shelf. Or a way to cross reference
to a Fram eg from the Universal filter??

Hello colinhulse,

Have you tried taking a filter or at least the brand and number to an Auto Zone (or similar) store? I just asked at the counter for an oil filter for our Westerbeke 10, and they were quickly able to match it on the counter computer. I think the cost was a bit over $8.

Napa can cross reference your numbers. They also list them by engine model. You can look them up on their web site @ http://napaonline.com . I would steer away from fram products, wally world sells them cheap for a reason. IMHO FWIW.

Go to www.wixfilters.com --> filter lookup ---> vehicle lookup --> off highway equipment ---> name of engine manufacturer, etc.

Wix is one of the premier automotive engine fuel and lube oil filter manufacturers in the country and 'rebrands' many of its own filters for other 'makers' including 'private brands' of engine manufacturers and suppliers, etc. Wix is also one of the 'brands' found in most auto parts supply shops, etc. You can make your 'cross reference' based on the Wix 'number' (which also defines specified µM retention rating).

Most of the USA auto filter manufacturers use a single world source of filter media, a 'resinated technical paper', so most USA made brands will be very similar in service and filtration function.

+2 for Wix. O'Rielly often has them too. Fram? They put a whole new spin on the word cheap. The filter element has cardboard ends and center tube. They often collapse internally and bypass, no longer even filtering. At that point the pickup screen on an old VW flat four has better filtering.

Wix are really good, Baldwin's are top shelf but kind of spendy and hard to find. But as it should generally be a once a year thing......

if your engine is a universal m18 it is 14hp. quite often you get what you pay for. make sure you dont buy a poor filter. a new engine will cost a whole lot more than an oil filter

Do you have the universal 5416 also?

What's expensive is the primary in my boat. the 220 series racor elements are always $30 plus. You will replace filters allot less often if you replace your tank and fuel system. (sludge) if you haven't already.

These should all work for a Universal M-18 (which is 14 horse power)

The Engine is the Universal 5416. Long Winter...I forgot!! Stay away from FRAM. Got it. I will try to find a cross ref. The problem I have is the cost plus shipping and then UPS nails me for "Brokerage services" I am in Canada, near Detroit.

My findings

Based on what the good people of this site told me. I came up with Kubota 15108-32080 NAPA 7030 and WIX 57030. There is no FRAM for the 5416.

Back to square one. They are cartridge filters and my engine has a simple screw on filter. They are repainted 'robins egg blue' with a Universal sticker slapped on. Guess I will do a little scraping and see what lies underneath. (probably a FRAM)

Colinhulse......I have a 1983 O'Day 30 with the Universal 5416 engine. I have used the Fram #PH2825 oil filters in my engine since it was new. The Fram PH2825 has no high pressure relief valve and is 4.94" long. I understand from some Universal sites that Universal filter number is 298852 has been superseded by Universal # 299381. If you look up those numbers the Universal 398852 cross references to a Fram PH2870A with a 22 psi relief valve and is 4.92" long and the new Universal 299381 cross references to a Fram PH3614 with 12 psi relief valve and is 3.34" long.
