FYI - I replaced the cable on my centerboard at the beginning of the season and did fine until we did the inevitable - ran up on a sand shoal. I needed to replace my cable at the beginning of the year and decided to go up one cable size since (as I was told by the previous owner) it ony lasted 2 years. When I replace the cable I increased to the next wire size and put a stainless eye on the end of the cable. Then I connected the shackle and it seemed fine except it didn't go all the way up into the well - it hung down about 2" on the end. I should have know but was anxious to get into the water. When we had our soft grounding - the centerboard was pushed all the way up into the well. It was stick! I had to have it short hauled and found the problem was too much hardware. My advice would still be to increase the wire size but eliminate the eye - nicro press right to the shackle - haven't had any problems since and tested it when I came into my slip at very low tide. It is still working. Hope this lesson can help someone else.
