Is anyone aware of a 3 blade retrofit for a Hunter 45 Legend. 55 hp Yanmar, 1 1/4 shaft. Currently installed is a 2 blade feathering with poor reverse properties.

Before you spend a LOT of money....

contact Kilian Prop in San Leandro, CA. They are the masters of the fixed blade prop. They can make your two blade prop perform for a couple of hundred dollars. If you do not like it you are not out a couple of thousand.

Feathering or folding?

Lee do you have a feathering propeller or a folding propeller? I can understand your statement if you have a folding propeller, but if it really feathering you won't find a noticeable improvement going to a 3-Blade fixed. The only prop that has more power in reverse than a 2-blade feathering is a 3-blade feathering propeller. Dare I ask what brand propeller you have?

Kiwi Prop

Lee, I have a Legend 35.5 with a 27 hp Yanmar engine. Last season I purchased a 3 bladed feathering prop from a company in New Zealand. The prop is called a Kiwi Prop. They should be able to fit your boat with an appropriately sized prop. The cost was about 1/2 that of an Autoprop or Max Prop. The Kiwi Prop is made from a composite material and accordingly is considerably lighter in weight than either the Autoprop or Max Prop. The lighter weight converts to less vibration. The pitch on the blades is easily adjustable for fine tuning. I am extremely satisfied with the performance, both under sail and under power - especially in reverse. I can't find the web site for the company, but if you do an internet search under "Kiwiprop" you should be able to find it. The Kiwi Prop may be a good alternative for you to explore. Dave
