I have a 1998 H340 and I want to replace my 2 blade propeller with a 3 blade. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you. Ken

If......

...you're a sailor then switch to a feathering prop. If you're a power boater that doesn't really care how your boat sails then put a fixed 3 blade on, it's cheaper. The difference in performance between the two types is enormous.

Professional help

A three blade prop will give you more power when motoring but there is some (slight) effect on our performance when sailing. I mostly cruise and I think the trade-off is worth it. You should contact any of the reputable prop manufacturers for their estimate of what pitch and diameter prop would be right for your boat. You will need the size and weight of the boat, the diameter of your prop shaft, the size of your engine and the rotation direction and model of your transmission or at least its reduction ratio. The prop people can offer you a prop based upon their calculation but also on their experience. I have been very happy with the Campbell Sailer prop and have attached a link below. I have a 2000 H340 with the Yanmar 3GM30F engine. I replaced the original two-blade 16 X 13 prop with a Campbell RH 15 X 9 X 1. I lost all of the vibration I had with the two blade and the boat has much more power into the wind. The prop has thinner cupped blades and the drag from the prop is minor.

2-3-feather

Ken, I went from a 2 blade on a Catalina 34 to a 3 blade on a Hunter 38. Hard to compare because the vessels are very different. However, I did have considerably more prop walk with the 3 blade. In March of this year I went to a feathering (KIWI prop) and am blown away by the performance improvement - sailing, motoring forward and particularly, backing down. I've lost ALL of my prop walk. At first this disturbed me because I didn't know how to handle the boat without it, but now, I might as well become a sales rep for these things. Good luck with your choice.
