I have just purchased a Catalina 30 with an atomic 4. I'm looking to replace my folding 2 blade with a 3 blade prop. Any suggestions what is the best size. Is there a used market for these props? What will I expect to loose or gain? Anybody have one for sale? Bob bstorrar@qwest.net

Prop

I have a Hunter 30 and had to change my prop some years ago because of performance poroblems. If you contact any (or all) of the prop manufacturers with your boat and engine size, transmission type and reduction ratio, and current prop size, they will calculate the correct pitch and diameter for your application. If you have the money, I think that the Autoprop is one of the better choices. You can use the web or Soundings to look for used props in the size you need.

I like my 3 blade

I have a 3 blade on my Catalina 34. It may not be as fast as the two blade variety, but when I want to stop, the three blade shows her stuff. It is especially handy when entering my slip. What I give up in speed is surpassed by the performance of the 3 blades when I need them!

3-blade prop

I have a 3-blade on my Catalina 320. It does offer additional drag when sailing, but sure is nice when motoring and trying to maneuver into a slip. The guiding principle is the the blade diameter should be the same as a properly sized 2-blade for your hull. Any larger diameter will induce excess cavitation due to the water flow along the hull; smaller will unduely reduce delivered power. That said, the pitch must be sized for your engine AND transmission combination. Consult Hunter and your engine manufacturer. My Catalina manual includes a spec sheet that lists the engine type, transmission ratio, and the recommended 2- and 3-blade prop diameter/pitch combinations. Final caution, when sailing (engine off) keep your transmission in gear. A free spinning prop without engine drive can accelerate the wear on the transmission due to lack of lubrication. --Ron
