2QM15 rated vs cruising rpm

Will one of you H33 owners enlighten me about the proper rpm to use with a 2qm15 yanmar as is in the 79-83 H33's? Data plate on engine says rated rpm 3000 rpm. if you use the usual rule of 80% for cruising, you get about 2400 rpm for cruise - I'd rather go 3000 as I pick up almost 1.5mph - does anyone know for sure what the rated vs cruise rpm for the 2QM 15 is? I'm too cheap to buy the manual, as I have one for the 2gm that is almost the same except for rpm and power ratings.

2qm15 -

I did buy the manual when I first got the boat which is a Hunter 30, 1979 and has the 2qm-15. According to Specifications page 1-2. Continuous rated output (DINA) 14HP @ 3000 rpm. One hour rating (DINB) 15 HP @ 3000. I cannot find anything reference max RPM to use as a basis. My max on the tach is 3250 rpm. Hope this will help some. Bob Maxson

My cruising RPM

My H33 likes to run at 2800 RPM while cruising. I might bump it up to 3000 for short distances, but usually don't feel I am getting that much more out of her above 2800. Now if only I could get the throttle to stay there! There have been many posts about the throttle creeping back after being set. When I bought Liberty, there was a leather strap hung from the pedestal guard. I quickly discovered what it was used for. I have a U clamp on the cable, but it is a fine adjustment which seems to loosen every week. Oh well, back to the leather. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

throttle creep down

My H33 has a pedestal guard, just right for looping a piece of properly adjusted bungee cord around it and the throttle lever. It effectively stops the throttle creep.

RPM's

I once took a Yanmar seminar and asked the same question about my 3QM30, which is pretty much the same engine+one cylinder. The guy said they call the "Q" series "bulletproof" because they are very strong...built to go 10,000 hours before an overhaul. His advice was "Max rpm for up to an hour, then back off 100-rpm and go all day".

Prop Pitch

Hey Guys, aren't you forgetting prop pitch ? Rpm's is one thing but you came overload that 2QM15 in a flash with too much pitch in the prop. I run my 81 for days at 2400, change the oil every 50 hours, and have never had one bit of problem with her. We all know that for some boats 2200 could be hull speed. There is more to look at then just rpm..

Duane is correct.

Duanes note here is important. It is assuming that your engine can reach the max rated RPM. (this should be on the plate on the front of your engine). If you cannot get the max RPM's while in gear, then you MAY be overproped. So these assumptions are that you have a clean bottom, clean prop, propper pitch etc. Then the rest of these assumptions are correct.

Further Comments on 2QM15 RPM

What spurred me to write the post in the first place was all the people who seem to think that all Yanmars are the same and think that they should wind their 2QM15 up to 3400-3600 rpm, like the 2GM series - the engines are similar, use many of the same external parts, but must have some differences, unless Yanmar just decided to twist the 2GM series tighter, thus generating more hp (18 vs 15) at max rpm - Personally, my 2QM in a H33 1980 is happy at 2700-2800 and does about 5.7kt.

Intersting question and

reponses. I was reading an article in the June Practical Sailor about the CALYPSO and her engine overhaul. The article stated that diesel engines (no brand mentioned) like to be run at 70% of continuos rating. I'm sure Robert wouldn't like to do that if he doesn't like running at 80%. I like the Yanmar students reply. Would like to take a course like that myself. Doug s/v Brenda Gail
