Anyone know of articles or kits on how to install a second reef line? I want to put a 2nd reef on our Catalina 270. Thanks

dump wind instead?

I recently tore out my 15 year old main. In discussion with our local sail maker we debated wheather I needed the second reef point when he made the replacement sail. His suggestion was "no" and he convinced me. My old sail had the second, but I never used it. The sailmaker (a successful and renouned racer in our parts) pointed out that with the sail reefed (first reef), one can simply let the sail out further to dump unwanted wind. If there is more wind than that takes care of, you better be headed for port.

2nd Reef

Roger is correct. You would only need the second reef point if you were off shore and had a long way to go. The proper sequence for shortening sail area is; reef the main, change to a smaller head sail, put in the second reef, change to a storm jib, drop the main and hoist a storm trisail (if so rigged), heave to! If you are still over powered with a reef in, and a smaller jib, start easing the main to depower. Good luck. Michael

If you have so much wind that you need a second reef, head in! If you still want to do it, take it to a reputable sailmaker in town
