2nd Holding Tank

While daydreaming about our boat, I thought of the idea of adding a 2nd holding tank, underneath the port side forward dinette seat, which is an empty locker. (Main tank is under v-berth)

It would be nice to have a little more tankage to add a couple days to our time on the hook, as full holding tank is always the first issue, and also it would help to counteract the list to starboard caused by the large water tank under the starboard setee. I am thinking a "y" valve on the head discharge so I can select which tank to fill, and also a vent and a deck pump out would need to be added.

Is this actually a good idea, or am I missing something? Any tips or advice would be much appreciated!

Do you really want to have to pump out two tanks through deck fittings on opposiite sides of the boat? Rinse out two tanks? Maintain two vent lines? Deal with preventing odor in two tanks? Maintain plumbing to and from two tanks?

If so, I say go for it!

But if not, I'm pretty sure there's a better way to increase your holding tank capacity.

Thank you for the reply Peggy. Those are excellent points that I did not think of! The only thing that would be ok is the pump out would be on the same side as the existing one, but I don't need any more maintenance than I already have.

I guess I was trying to kill two birds with one stone by helping the list to starboard but there is other ways to solve that problem like the second battery I am adding on the port side along with some creative packing.

We might be able to find a location for a bigger tank...or maybe there are ways to conserve flush water you aren't aware of. Give me a shout via email if you'd like to kick some ideas around.
