I am having trouble with my throttle on a 2gmf (H - 28.5 ). There seems to be excessive throttle preload to the idle position. The only way to maintain rpm above 1200 is to manually hold the throttle lever, otherwise it will slowly creep back to idle. I disconnected the cable and found the spring tension to be at the lever on the motor, can anyone tell me if this is normal or is there a fix ? Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Don Prince

I recently bought a 28.5 hunter, 1985. There was this little bungie looped over the throtle and then cnnected to the chrome handle bar in front of the wheel. I was curious, then removed it. I found the same problem you described. I replaced the bungie temporarily. Then a few days later I found a hand written note in the boats log book. The note detailed the same problem, it was dated 2/91. Aparently ther is no easy fix. Sorry

the remedy is not to tinker with the throttle spring assy on the engine. That will not remedy the problem. Try this: Remove the compass from the steering pedestal. Under the compass binacle where the throttle handle enters the steering pedestal is a lock screw that impinges on the throttle handle shaft. Tighten down the screw and throttle actuation resistance increases so that slippage ceases.

What you need is a Morse J clamp. There is a posting in the photo forum that I did on this problem. It shows the clamp and the part number too. The closer to the throttle control you can mount it the better. I had to put ours in the engine compartment.

I had the same problem, but fixed it the way that Jim Reed described. It was easy, took about 10 minutes. The simplest solution is usually the best.

Bob: I think you can get them from most any boat shop that carries Morse cables. If that does not work try a Yanmar dealer. I got mine from the Yanmar dealer in Richmond, CA. No throttle slip since the installation.

I did it like steve and jim mentioned as that is the "right way". Unfortunately, I had just installed a brand new cable that slid so easy, I couldnt get the tension bold tight enough to hold above 2200. not wanting to mess with the internal return spring, I bought a double ended hook spring from the hardware store and fastened it from the front of the throttle lever to a secure spot (just hooked it over) further back. Works like a dream.
