Just wondering if anyone has a part number for an oil filter from fram or likewise that can be purchased at say walmart or an automotve distributer. I know marine parts generaly cost more but I think that $18.00 for a filter because it says Yanmar on it is pure theft. Dave

Just changed mine

I just replaced mine with a Fram PH3593(number found in the archives). About $5 at the autoparts store.. But of course I forgot the one I bought at home.. bought another one at the local West Marine for about $7 as I recall.. now I have a spare ;-) Gary

I've never paid more than $7-8 either.

I have purchased Yanmar oil filters over the years and have not found these type of prices. If you can find a Yanmar tractor dealer in your area, they should work fine too.

Wouldn't touch a Fram filter

I don't generally use the OEM filters because of price, availability, and not knowing exactly what it is, inside. I've done a lot of research, and a few filter teardowns myself, and one bit of advice I can give with authority is to not use Fram filters. Take a look at this site, adn also others turned up with a Google search for "oil filter study:" http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html I use Napa and Bosch, but latley I've heard Bosch has changed manufacturers, and is of inferior quality. Mobil 1 filters seem very good, althought hey often cost as much as OEM - but are more generally available.

Yanmar's view (propaganda?)

I attended a Yanmar seminar in Deltaville a few years back. Guy there warned against using anything but Yanmar oil filters. I recall him saying that oil comes out of pump at very high pressure straight into the filter! Auto-type filters can't hold up, as they are designed to catch oil (particulates) after oil circulates through the engine. Anybody know for sure? Joe

That's a lie

All engines are made the same. Oil is pumped through the oil filter and then up into the engine and then the oil drains down into the pan. It's impossible to run the oil through the filter after it lubes the engine because it's all over the place. That's also why your drain plug is magnetic...to catch the metal fragments because the pan is where all the particles are. I can also tell you that I will never buy another oil filter from Yanmar if I can help it. I had to replace my engine because of a faulty oil filter and a bad oil pressure switch. The oil filter's rubber ring busted and I lost all my oil in a matter of seconds. The buzzer never went off and I motored I guess for about 5 minutes without any oil before the motor died. Mechanic took it apart and said everything was ruined. Also, if you haven't noticed, yanmar filters are smaller because they reduced the quality to only cover the minimum specs.

Typical Yanmar FUD

Yanmar people are always spouting this kind of FUD to protect the revenue they derive from Yanmar branded parts and accesories. They indoctrinate Yanmar users at their clinics and classes on engine maintenance (that they charge for).

Thanks Guys

The filter that the marine shop handed me was about half the size of the one on the engine. When I saw the price tag of 18.00 I handed it back to him and politely said no thanks. This is in Canada eh. I find it hard to believe that Yanmar manufactures their own filters. Could be a Fram or similar with white paint instead of orange?
