Does anyone know if the engine shut off cable needs to be removed when replacing the instrument panel (large) on a 1984 Hunter 31 2GMF Yanmar? Does anyone know if the knob on the cable screws off? I've tried but I don't want to ruin it. That would let the cable pass through without removing it.

Yes

But may be hard to get off with salt water tends to make things hard to remove after years of salt, but mine fell off and lost and had to make new one.

I just removed and relocated the shutoff on my '83 H34. It had pulled out of the panel. I didnt try to force the knob off, and because I needed to wanted to lube the cable I pulled the cable out, installed the larger dia shaft piece with the larger dia plastic that the knob sits against, in the thicker fiberglass at the left side of the panel,(using a larger fender washer on each side) then rethreaded the lubed cable and re-attached at the motor. Everything works much better.

Yes, it does unscrew for removal and replacement. Did it a few years ago.
