2GMF engine stalling

My 1988 33.5 has a 2GMF diesal engine. Last week the engine was losing rpms like the fuel filters were plugging up. I replaced the the main filter (rancor) and the engine filter. Bled the engine and started it ran fine. Problem appeared to be fixed. We went sailing motored out without any problems. Spent several hours sailing. Upon returning the engine started fine and ran for 5-10 minutes normally at then started to lose rpms and act like it running out of fuel, then it stalled. I was able to restart the engine for just a couple seconds and then it stalled. We were unable to restart. I am not sure what to check. We able to sail in in 25kts of wind and dock. It wasn't pretty, but we didn't break anything. Any direction would be great.Bil ThomasFeng Shui

Engine Stalling

Looks like the engine is starving itself out. You said you were able to sail in 25kts. You also said it engine ran fine when you motored out. Feels to me like you have a bunch of crud at the bottom of the fuel tank. When you sail in 25kts, you're bound to shake it loose, clogging up the filter system and starving the engine. Replace your filters again, then run it on a very calm day at maximum rpm under load. If it runs fine, my guess is probably right and you'll need to siphon the tank and get it cleaned. Good luck.

Same problem

I changed filters this weekend and had a similar problem, I ended up bleeding the engine again this time I bled the remaining air out of the end fuel line just as it enters the injector. After having the engine starve itself several times.

Clean the fuel pick-up pipe.

I had exactly the same problem several years ago on my H34. Cured it by removing the fuel pick-up from the tank - it was clogged. On mine there is a screen filter in the pipe that was completely blocked with black gunk. Have used biocide regularly ever since. I took the intake out again on Saturday - much cleaner but there was a wad of gunk against the screen.Derek

2GMF starving

Just a thought but It could also be that the starving is because you might have your air intake noozle aimed up high in the engine compartment. Hot air rises and is thinner- starving the engine for air. Make sure it is aimed downwards.JTM

I have had this problem too.

Bil,I have changed both filters too but I do not know how to get into the tank to clean the fuel pick up filters.I cannot get fuel to the filters.Let me know if you have found anything I live in Arnold, maybe we could shareour information and solve this.

As suggested I pulled the fuel pickup and cleaned and cleaned the tank. The filter screen is several inches up the tubes. I have been out 3 times and no more problems. Thanks for the suggestions!!Bil Thomas
