2GMF alternator not charging

90degree heat, hot, sweaty and tired from reloading all the boats stuff, I kinda screwed up - connected {backwards!} the main battery in the dark recess under the sink and then put a wonder bar between the block and the altenator to pull out the alternator and tighten the belt. As I started to lever the alternator I saw/heard a small pooff & spark and slight puff of smoke on the back side of the 2GMF. Oddly the Guest 2 battery switch was in OFF position which made me check the main battery again to now see my "backwards" connection. I corrected the wiring and was able to kick over the engine. Problem is my volt meter add-on under the chart table control panel tells me it is at 12v not the usual 13.5-13.75. Also the starter alarm wistle is on continuously but fads in and out abit when I toggle the test switch on the control panel. Could be a bad toggle switch too. I suspect I'm not charging but runnin on the battery. Question: Is the alternator/regulator electronic integrated or modular replaceable on these units? Can I buy a voltage regulator separately or am I in for a new or rebuilt alternator? Is there a fuse of some sort on the back of the alternator that went? ; { Has anybody had this scenario and what was their remedy (and approx. cost)? Thanks in advance.

Not sure about your problem.

Jim: Not sure about your problem, but if you need another alternator you can get a 55 or 70 amp Hitachi from Mack Boring. I think that these are about $300 rebuilt and you just install it like the original (no modifications). The stock alternator is only 35amps. My guess is that you blew the diodes in the alternator. If you take it to Mack Boring, they can probably test it for you. I would not run the engine any more until you have it tested. Probably should also have your batteries checked too. Check with your insurance company, they may cover the damage.

Sorry about that!!!!

I did the same thing you did and it cost me 280.00 for a rebuilt alternator with labor. You can save yourself some money if you remove your alternator yourself and have it rebuilt locally. Good luck.... P.S. West Marine has a fuse you can install to prevent what happened to you and I think it's about 7 or 8 dollars. It will blow when the cabels are crossed or you turn your a/b switch to the off position when your engine is running.

Thanks- Joe & Steve

It is an expensive lesson- What size fuse did you install and to which stud? + or - ?? Mack Boring asked me if its a 55 Amp altn/ They may have "core" trade- in allowance for rebuild. $280 you say? oouch. I gotto go down the shore this week, pull it off and have em test it. JiM

Interchangeable

Jim: I believe that your alternator is the 35amp. The 55 & 70 are interchangeable. Gives you a lot more poop for the same money. I was quoted $295 for the 70amp (rebuilt). I was also told that the rebuilt units are actually new ones! As far as the fusable link, I would think that this would go on the positive side? We actually had this happen on a Sears battery on my moms car. The batteries were built backwards pos. was neg. and neg. was pos. Luckily her Datsun 510 had a fusable link so it was a matter of replacing it and putting in another new battery and we were off. These things are probably a good idea for all battery situations, but no one thinks about them until something like your experience happens.

replace Yanmar alternator

Hi -- I also had a non functional alternator (35amp). I replaced both the alternator and voltage regulator for $120. Actually they rebuilt my old alternator and installed an external regulator. The regulator can be adjusted for various charge profiles depending on how you use your boat. The info is probably most valuable from the standpoint of what it should cost. good luck, Henry

ordered a 100amp

I found yanmardiesel.com in FL which has a yanmar compatible 100amp for $249 or 150amp for a bit more. It won't take the fuse you mentioned so I'll have to be "extra" careful. I just hope it fits fine.See it on their web page- in bright red. Jim
