Hello all what is the correct operating temp for a 2gm20f??

We run at 2600-2700 on the tach and we run at about 180 or a bit under is this normal I think it used to be lower I think.
It I runs very consistently at that temp.

you gage may be a little off ( check the electrical connections) if it used to run cooler on the gauge or you may need to service the heat exchanger flues or you may need to service the water strainer and you seawater pump could need servicing and have some ware on the cover plate or the hump cam inside the pump also check your thermostat

180 is fine. Running an engine at too low a temperature will cause carbon deposits on the pistons, valves, and the oil will not lubricate properly. 180 degrees is just fine for your engine. Leave it alone.

If you were positive that you were running cooler then something has changed and woodster mentions a few of the things to check. Yanmar engines are quite often set up with 71 degrees Celsius (about 160) thermostats. Running at 180 is not a problem. I would keep checking to see if it does keep on increasing which would obviously mean something needs to be addressed.

I think the specified thermostat for that engine is 185F (85C).. so you are kinda at the end of the thermostat control zone IF your gauge is telling you the truth. if it is running consistently at that temp, you probably do not have a problem.. but sometime in the next couple of years if the temp is getting higher, it may be prudent to go through the system and verify everything operating to spec..

EDIT: HI, Claude !.. your post appeared right as I posted.. Your answer sounds just like mine ! Claude Agreement!

RE EDIT ! Thermostat specification is that it begin to open at 160F (71C) and be fully open at 185F

Thanks everyone, kind of what I was thinking just wanted to confirm. I realize in the not to distant future I will have to do some cooling system service. Thanks for the stats on temp range I was having a hard time finding info online
