I have a 96 29.5 with a 2GM20F diesel. It does start and run ok but it has this single leaver control. When i start in neutral it coughs and bangs and seems like only one cylinder is catching. i move the throttle a bit and it evens out and then runs good. however moving the lever engages the prop. If I could set the throttle a little higher speed I think it would start better. Does anyone know if there is a warm up setting on this control? The idle speed is in the 800 rpm range.

I have not seen a single lever control that does not have a mechanism to disengage the transmission while allowing to rev the engine in neutral. Have you tried pulling on the ring bellow the ball before throttling up?

I have the same shifter. There is a button where the lever pivots. When in neutral, push in the button and pull up (or down) on the handle. It will allow you to rev up in neutral.

I found the button at the pivot point that pushes in to allow just the throttle to be operated. Thank you. However the lever decided to come off in my hand during docking! It looks like just the set screw for the handle was loose. I decided to take the faceplate off and look at every thing else. It all looks ok except for a small slotted set screw angling down just above the lever attachment. You can only see it with the plastic cover off and it is not tight. What is that for? Does anyone know what make of control this is? Perhaps I could download the installation instructions.

I don't have your set-up, so can't contribute to your question ...

... But how fast did your heart start beating when the lever ended up in your hand when docking? Hope you weren't coming in fast and needed to gun the engine in reverse at the last moment!

I most often have a strong crosswind when returning to berth. So coming in fast with a firm commitment followed by a blast of reverse thrust to stop is necessary. I have often cringed at the thought of reverse not happening!

We just installed a similar shifter and there is a button that you should be able to push in "when the shifter is in neutral". You cannot push it in if it is in gear, so sometimes you need to move the handle back and forth.

Actually I think it stopped, followed by a loud "oh crap" . Fortunately I was coming in slow. We are new to the boat and its our first one with a inboard. So I am still learning how it handles. So with that and my wife's calm demeanor, we docked safely.

What makes my heart race is the day before we were out on the lake motoring into a 20 knot wind. Had it come of then we would have been in trouble.

On the original question, the controller matches closest to a Seastar CH2200/2300. The small screw is probably the throttle break adjustment, near as I can find.
