I have a couple of quick questions. 1. Where do you get Yanmar oil in Ontario? (Apparently Yanmar don't let Torsen Marine to ship parts into the Canada. 2. How to check oil level in the gear box. It has a dip stick but I can't see normal min max level marks as you see on engine dipstick. How do you know if level is good or not?

Oil

You don't need Yanmar Oil. You can use Shell Rotella. Just keep the transmission box full.

answer to no2 depends on which transmission

Igor see the link below from the Yanmar site which details both how much and what type oil to use in the transmission. Unless it has been replaced, the dip stick should have one mark indicating the proper level. It appears from the chart that none of these transmissions should be completely filled.

engine lube oil

rotella T is commonly considered one of the better choices. If you maintain the engine properly which includes changing the oil and filter regularly and you use the recommended viscosity lube oil which is diesel rated, it likely makes no difference which brand you choose. Since we don't know what transmission you have, note the chart on the link I previously attached as some Yanmar transmissions use transmission oil rather than engine oil. There will be a plate on the side of the trans indicating what model it is.

Yanmar dealers in Ontario

This is a list of the Yanmar dealers in Ontario, several are in the Toronto region. They can order any of the parts you may need now or future reference. As Warren has said, you don't need Yanmar oil, Rotella is fine. Check the ID plate on the trans as it might give you the oil weight and capacity as my 2005 does. http://www.yanmarmarine.com/mycidealers/dealerresultspopup.asp?COUNTRYCODE=12

I have a 1986 Yanmar 2GM20f

and use SAE 15w40 Delo diesel engine oil in it. Rotella diesel oil is ok, as well. I use SAE 30w oil for the transmission. I check the oil level in the trans by removing the dipstick, cleaning it and laying it back in the hole again (without turning it closed). Then remove it and you should see one line around the dipstick about a quater inch up from the bottom. Clean oil is hard to see on the dipstick so I lay it on a clean piece of brown paper bag. That should indicate if the oil level in the trans is up to the mark or not. DO NOT overfill the transmission.

Do not fill the trans box

This could have disastrous results. The proper level is marked with a thin line 1/4-inch from the base, but it's impossible to read. Construct a dummy dipstick out of wood pole painted white, which shows up more readily.

Thank you

Thanks again for all responses! I have mechanical transmission so I need to use engine oil not ATF. Yanmar deallers in Ontario are joke. They don't answer the phone or respond to emails and if they do they are not open on weekend! Plus their prices twice what it cost in US. Torresen Marine in Michigan was great if I know they don't ship to Ontario i would stock up while my boat was still in Ohio. I did stock up with belts/impeller/fuel filters etc for the trip from Ohio to Toronto but I run out of oil filters and oil already. I will see if Shell Rotella is easier to get and may use this oil but there is still question of getting oil filters and other parts :(. Thanks Igor

Yanmar

What marina do you have your boat. I've found Bayport in Midland stock a lot of the Yanmar parts and Baymoorings, Pentanguishene ( where we are located) ordered in everything I needed within a week. Either may be willing to ship parts to you. Just order in advance and you'll have what you need for Fall or Spring work. Other thought... have you checked with the service guys at Angus Yachts. Ontario Hunter dealer must have or can get Yanmar parts?? Other online source in Ontario is Pride Marine in Kingston http://www.pridemarine.com/index.cfm?category=10025|10788&product=2512861 and http://www.pridemarine.com/index.cfm?category=10025|10343|10563
