My 1989 2GM20F cooling fresh water pump started making noise so I've decided to replace it. I am heading to the boat Friday with the new pump, a gasket, antifreeze, radiator flush, distilled water, a new belt and all new hoses. I've decided to use Prestone Comand Heavy Duty Antifreeze and Prestone Radiator Flush and Cleaner, I've heard bad things about Dexcool. I'm thinking about flushing the system and purging it of all the old green antifreeze before changing out the pump. Does anyone have step by step instructions on purging the system and getting all the air out? Also when installing the new gasket, what type of sealant should I use and should there be sealant on both sides of the gasket?

Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I had to change ours last summer but just kept the old red antifreeze. The work was easy.
I don't remember using any gasket sealant and it doesn't leak.
I think I burped the air out by loosening a hose up high.

Use a product called Permatex High Tack. This is what I used on my yanny pump and it's what I use as a mechanic. It's design to hold the gasket in place during assembly and also provides sealing properties. Concerning purging, mine already had green so I didn't have to drain and flush. And yes, stay away from Dexcool!

What is the recommended antifreeze for a Yanmar fresh water system? And is there a cooling system flush that is safe for these engines?

It is recommended by the manufacturers of Onan and Perkins that you use no sealant on that gasket. If you do, make sure you have great access, so you can remove the old sealant and clean it up well enough when you need to work on that pump again. You do not need any sealant if you purchased the correct gasket.
