How stiff should the speed control lever be? (That's the lever on the side of the engine that the "throttle cable" attaches to). Mine is very stiff - I can feel a spring resistance inside that increases strongly after 50% travel. Its so stiff that the remote control at the pedestal has to be forced so much it bends.. The previous owner had to tie the lever open to maintain speed.. Addendum: I've just been looking in the Clymer manual - I see there is a governor inside - could it be that the lever gets easier to move as the engine speeds up? (Just a thought?) I had a similar problem and it was due to the cable mechanism at the pedestal. It was bent and I had to replace it. Hope this helps. It is a tedious job best done by someone who has done it before.

This may be a common problem. It has happened to me on another engine model. First eliminate the cable question by disconnecting it from the throttle lever on the engine. If the cable sticks then just change the cable. If it is the engine lever, then run down to the auto store and buy two things: 1) PB Blaster penetrating oil and 2) spray lithium grease. Soak the lever with the PB spray overnight. This should loosen the lever. They sometimes get seawater on them and they "freeze up". Once it is loose, spray the mechanism with the lithium grease (it's white) to protect it from corrosion. Spray it every six months. You should be in business. Good Luck!
