I am looking at replacing the rudder on my 285 this winter. Does anyone have any experience on who makes a good solid fiberglass rudder?

Why replace

Michael, I have a h28.5 and just a bit curious as to why your rudder needs to be replaced. Appreciate if you would so kind as to share reason(s) for undertaking this job. Thanks.

Rudder

The Rudder's sold on this web site are made by Ida Sailor Marine. They are a great up grade and offer a life time warrenty. I have one for my 28.5 and it was a great improvement over the orginal Foss Foam rudder. The Foss Foam Rudder's are not a very good design and over time will split and absorb water. We talked alot about this on the Hunter 28.5 group on Yahoo, do you know about the group? We have over 80 memeber's all who sail a H 28.5. Cliff

Replacement of 285 rudder

I have serious water penetration in my rudder and at what it costs to get repared I felt it would be better to replace it with a solid glass rudder. Where the post exits the rudder it will continue to fail as it is under the water. I have friends that have repared theirs every season or two.

Re: Rudder

I agree whole-heartedly with Cliff. I have an Ida Sailor rudder on my 28.5 and it works wonderfully. My original rudder was wet and partially delaminated. It would have cost me around $750 to have it rebuilt. The Ida rudder didn't cost much more than that and it's garranteed for life never to split, absorb water, etc. It's made of high-density polyethylene (sp?). Not only is it superior construction-wise, the boat handles flawlessly. I can steer the boat without any real effort regardless of the conditions. It's very responsive as well. It also makes for low power consumption with the auto-pilot. I highly recommend it.
