I've just found water under the starboard cushion in my V berth -- seeming to come from the bulkhead or, more likely, the seam where the V berth joins the hull. There was a lot of water but I could find no evidence of it entering anywhere above the level of the cushion (though I suppose the liner above it could have dried out and left no stain). The cushion was soaked. Is there any chance there could be osmosis through the hull? Is the V berth seam above the waterline? I'd welcome comments.

There is a drain line from locker to the front drain. Mine was cracked and leaked. You have to remove wooden cover in v berth. Jim

Thanks to all three. It occured to me while reading your replies that the starboard side is the side I tie up on, and the middle stanchions are used to tie the spring lines -- and we have had some rain with furious winds pulling on the lines. Glad to see your are still there, Bob. Thought you had moved on!

I don't think so! Even though I sold my 272LE last August, you still just can't beat the folks on this forum. So I'm still hangin' around dishin' it out! First season with the new boat was terrific. I bought a 1980 Nonsuch 30 Classic. I think it would be rather difficult to go back to two sail sailing again. Anyway, back to your issue. Tying up to stanchions or stanchion bases is a definate no-no! I installed midship cleats on my O'day to prevent such leaks. I tied my springer to the midship cleat which is designed and installed to take the stress. This is one of those things that alot of people do so it must be okay. Well, it isn't. I rate that right up there with tying your halyard off to a stanchion base and then tensioning the bee-jeezus out of it. For the Halyard, I installed a pad-eye on the deck and reinforced it with a large enough backing plate to spread the load out a bit. The less you use your stanchions for tying off the longer they last between re-beds and the less likely you are to end up with spider-cracks around them. V Berth Water Leak - 272
I checked my 272 V-berth this weekend and it has a water stain all around the bottom of the carpeted hull covering from previous water leaks. You can get any water staining on the carpeted hull liner out with SpotShot (credit to Bob Todd on that one). I had previously noted various leaks at the hull joint and thought it was time to rebed my stanchions. Before I attempted rebedding, I followed posted advice from this site to run a bead of Life Caulk around the whole boat where the top of the aluminum rub rail meets the fiberglass deck. Has worked for two years with no more drips running down the cabin walls in places like the V-berth. Bob Todd - miss you on this site. I also feel a little guilty that my halyard is connected to the base of a middle stanchion on my 272. The last thing I did as I said "good bye" for a few months to my hauled boat yesterday was to give the halyard one last tensioning pull. I live and learn from this site. Cheers to you. Frank
