Anyone replace the traveller car on a 272? I was just told that I would have to send the track to have the bend matched? Perhaps the person was mistaken, as I only want to replace the car with something with some added purchase and cam cleats for setting the traveller quickly. image-3531105750.jpg Something like that.

What brand / model did you use?

Thanks, Andrew

Andrew, I recently was docked next to a 272, nice boat. I did notice the curved track. FYI, the curved tracks, while ubiquitous in the 70s and early 80s, was eventually replaced by straight tracks. The reason for this is sail trim: the curved track changed the mainsheet tension on the boom, and thus the sail shape, when moved from inboard to outboard.

If you're going to the trouble of improving the purchase, you might want to consider upgrading to a straight rack and the best source of that is Garhauer.

Thank you! That is good info. I checked them out, and I see what you mean! I am guessing I would need to make a wedge at each end of my tracks to accomodate the flat traveler track. Right now, it sits up on risers that accomodate the bend.

Thanks for your help!

Andrew

you do not need to replace or do anything to the track...I'm still working on sending you pictures. The reply above has the fellow's name at Garhauer....you'll be very glad you made the changes...takes 3 hours or so....not long at all....Pat

Yeah. I am not sure changing the track will be so important for me. I don't race, and I can't imagine the curve diminishes handling that much. I am more interested in ease of handling and single-handing.

I will hang tight for those pictures!

Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew, you received the pictures I sent, but they do show cleats by garhauer and if I were doing it again, I would use harken cleats at each end....also, the traveler car occasionally uses a bit of lubricant as it is much easier to adjust.....Good luck and I'm glad you finally got the shots....email me with any questions....Patrick

Andrew, the mainsheet tackle works like a dream....it allows effortless adjustment in both light and stronger winds/gusts here on the prairie. The question is why did we not re-design it sooner..? It only took 27 years. Patrick in Wichita

Update on the traveler fix:

Here are pictures.

The first is the end blocks. The second is the traveler car.
It works ok, but... the curved track causes the end blocks to be below the car, so the car gets torqued and binds sometimes. I think I either need to raise the end blocks, or I need to get a straight track. Hmm... That means a new traveler car... which i can get with blocks built-in!
Easing the traveler to leeward prior to tacking works fine. Hauling it to windward AFTER tacking, on a beat, tacking to windward... Doesn't work as well... the car can bind.

I will try raising the end blocks on some Starboard risers first. I have some scrap around, and I will cut it and install it this coming weekend. Let you know how it goes. I ain't got much money in it... Yet! :) huff...

Any ideas are welcome!

Thanks,

Andrew

how do you like having the two ends for adjustment? I have oth control lines terminating at the traveler car...hate it. Mainly because of the poor working angle in the current setup. My traveler is on the bridgedeck also.

I don't mind having the lines at the ends. It separates them, and it keeps things from getting too messy. I have only used it one time so far, but it seems good. I just gotta fix the angle created by the curved track. It is causing binding when the car is near or past the middle to the far side.

I will post if any problems with the end controls are revealed over the next few weeks.

Thanks,

Andrew
