When I took my 272 out for the winter, I noticed the rudder had split down the front. The crack was only about 1/4 inch deep and 1/4 inch wide but all the way down the front edge. Should I sand this down and re-fiberglass the front or should I just fill the crack with epoxy? Has anyone had this problem and what did you do to fix your rudder?

Rudder Split

Doug, unfortunately this is a common problem with the foam filled rudders. The seam is a weak area and over time water works its way into the rudder. The problem is magnified by the freeze/thaw cycle of your winters. If it was me I would proceed with your repairs. You will have to dry the foam out though- thoroughly-before repairing the seam, otherwise you will be resealing in this wicked in water. You may want to talk with Bill Foss, at Foss Foam in California, the likely makers of your rudder. They should be able to advise you of the repairs. See their attached website. Good luck. Don
