272 rebedding chainplates with mast up

Hi guys, new 272 LE owner here diving into rebedding a leaky starboard chainplate. What are your preferred methods for securing the mast on an O'Day 272 to allow removal of shroud to pull up the deck plate? Since the 272 does not have a toe rail with holes in it, perhaps the best method I've come across so far was to tie a ratchet strap around the hull and use a halyard shackle through the straps hook near the gunwale. Any insight or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Maybe I did it wrong on my 25, but the deck plate was just screwed down with self tapping screws. So I removed them, clean and dug out all the bad sealant and stuffed the gap full of 4200 and the pressed the cover plat back down on the deck and screwed it in. This was a first repair so it has been fine like this for over a year now and I always check them in the cabin for moisture and water.

Just to be clear my chain plates are not attached to the deck plate and I did not remove the chain plates from the bulkhead.

Were you able to take the deck plate completely off? On the 272 there is very little clearance between the deck plate and clevis pin, especially in the forward inner corner. I'm not sure the forward inner screw would actually come out without at least the inner shroud pin removed.

My deck plate came up to the clevis pin, it was tight. I used a variety of tools to clean out the area, knife, screw driver, a fine pick, like an ice pick with a very thin head and point and handle. The 4200 made a mess but I just cleaned it up and still looks good. The 4200 might not be ideal, but that was what the previous owner recommended.

I'd think removing the inner shroud pin would be ok, since you will be putting it all back together relatively quickly.

I would think you could secure the main and jib halyards to the dock if you really need to remove both upper and lower shrouds. Make sure the boat is snug up to the dock. You could also get someone to tend the boat to make sure it doesn’t move.

What's the issue on the 272 dankarofl? The cover plate on deck on the 272 is just that, a cover plate. The chainplate connects from the bulkhead up through the deck and cover plate to the turnbuckle. So the leak is just around the cover plate. To plug the leak, leave the mast be. Just unscrew the 4 screws holding the cover plate to the deck, lift it up out of the way and fill the gap with butyl tape, then re- tighten. Do this once a year before launch and you'll be fine.
