272 My Chainplates

So I pulled the chainplates on my 86 272 today and (drum role)they didn't seem bad. There was a some moisture at the starboard plate but no apparent wood rod and no visible metal corrosion. The thru hull seem tight and pretty solid and the bulkhead seems a bit compressed under the block and backer plate but... I'm surprised after all of the horror stories I've heard. Am I missing something?I plan to polish the plates and backers. Flush the thru hull with accetone and dry out with a hair dryer. Thorouly dry the and then varnish the blocks and then rebed per Don Casey.Should I do something else? Maybe add some marine ply to the bulkhead ect?Rich

Have you ever used the bedding compound before? I used it and was not happy with the final result.Although it is water proof it is down right ugly. Can it be scraped off and re-applied without damaging anything?

I used sikaflex 292 on my chainplates after cleaning out the bedding compound and a thourough dryout 3 years ago now and have not seen any leaks and I do look all the time.Another trick is to mask off the area around the flange for the cnplate before you rebed it then pull off the masking for a nice clean finish
