272 mainsheet and traveller

Hi all; first, thanks for all the great, reassuring info you have given on centerboards, mast stepping, and 26 -vs- 272! Second, anyone have pictures of the traveller and mainsheet setup on the 272? Has anyone used an alternative mainsheet setup?

I find myself in the position of now owning both a 26 AND a 272! I gotta figure out which one to keep and which to sell. I admit I really want the 272, but they are both in great shape! However, my wife is looking at the mainsheet setup on the 272 with some skepticism, as in she might be asked to handle that line while I handle the helm! Hahaha! She is new to sailing, and she is slowly learning, but I don't want to spook her! she is a little skittish yet! I personally love the traveller over the cabin. Gets it out of the way of the cockpit.

Anyone use a barney post on a 272? Anyone use a stern mounted mainsheet on a 272?

I know I can rig whatever I want, but it never hurts to hear others' experiences!

Thanks,

Andrew

Good Morning agprice22.....we have a 272 that started life in 87 with the manual traveler.
My wife said no way....because if the traveler is under a heavy load, it would be the pits for her.....so I called Nico Fico and got control lines and cleats for the cabin top set up...
everything I needed was at my doorstep within a week and I actually installed it...no need to change the bent cabin top traveler...just add a car and end cleats...took me about three hours to install and walla....that was fixed....I also single hand the boat a lot and so I put long enough lines that I could control each line (starboard and port) from the helm of our LE with no problem....we also put on a much better mainsheet block
setup that Harken sent for my wife, upon her request (phone to call to Olaf)...now, even in heavy winds the main is easy to trim....still have the Olaf drawing if you are interested....I also made that a really doable thing from the helmsman seat...the secret is a good cleat that's easy to flip a line into and out of....a Harken I guess I"m describing. Good Luck! Patrick

Absolutely! I would be thrilled to have the drawing. I wasn't sure of the loads yet, so I imagined either some lines and cleats or even small winches to control the traveller. And I imagined an end boom main sheet run to a barney post near the rear of the cockpit or stern mounted block.

I will be interested to see your drawing.

Thanks,

Keep the details coming!

I found this setup online. It seems the 4:1 arrangement for the traveler would only need some cam cleats to hold the lines. And I think I seemthe mainsheet being run to a block at the base of the mast to be run aft maybe to a clutch?

I had the manual traveler arrangement on my '87 LE as well. Was not pleasant, especially when solo. I added the traveler controls last season and love them. I just added sheaves to the existing car, turning blocks at the traveler ends, and cam cleats on each side of the cabin top.

My main sheet was already routed to a sheet stopper on the starboard cabin top.

Was very inexpensive and works great!

The attached picture is how a friend of mine modified the car, mine resembles that except I used two fender washers instead of the single SS plate (because I couldn't find a plate and the water was calling!).

Thanks so much. I have some good ideas now. I wonder if anyone tried another mainsheet arrangement?

Thanks,

Hi Pat; do you still have those drawings for the 272 mainsheet configuration you got from Harkin?

Could you post them to me?

Thanks,

Andrew

I did not want the mainsheet run to a cabin top sheet stopper as I like to single hand sometimes and leaving the helm of a 272 to access a cabin top sheet stopper seemed tedious. So I have a nice harken block on the traveler with enough line to allow me to easily control the mainsheet from the helm without ever leaving the wheel.. A quality harken block easily opened and closed with a snap from the helm..Also, I will look for the diagram from Harken...I don't think we used a double block, it is a triple block.....Pat

I've got to look for them but Heather says we have the drawing...she says it is downstairs in my office and I think it's in my 272 manual on the boat....I'll look downstairs this morning and on the boat tomorrow.....(maybe today if time allows me to drive out)..
We did not do ours exactly as shown..as we have too much purchase to allow the main sheet to run freely...we have too much purchase if you can believe that....I can also
take a picture of ours....but I don't know how to load them on to this website..I have a
hard time just emailing them....will look today. Pat

I know of a 1986 272 that has the traveler mounted at the forward end of the cockpit instead of over the cabin top. This boat is set up similar to the 25 and 26 (owner previously had owned 2 different 25s, a 1975 and a 1978) and didn't like the cabin-top location on the 272. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures and he wasn't on-line last time I spoke to him (and the boat hasn't been in the water for at least 3-4 years, I don't know if he still ownes her?) I'll see if I can get a chance to talk with him for info if I see him.
