272 main sheet

Anyone else tired of fighting their mainsheet setup? When it is easier to pull the boom in by hand, then trim the sheet, something is wrong with the design.

I am considering changing to a double block setup to make trimming the main more do-able. Anyone else changed their system in this (or any other) way?

This is a drawing from the 272 owners manual of the mainsheet configuration. Is this your setup?

Yes, that is the set up. When wind exceeds 12-15 knots, the amount of effort required to trim is just excessive, IMHO. Have raced much larger boats that continuous main adjustment was doable with one hand. So I am still thinking about how to increase the mechanical advantage. I know the two 90 degree turns will always create problems. Have considered running the sheet straight back to the cam cleat I have forward of the cabin top winch to see if that would help. Would be more economical than going with a double block system, but there may be no mechanical advantage gained going from two 90 degree turns to one 150 degree turn.
