The shower sump question reminded me to ask... Does anyone know how the bilge water in the engine compartment makes it to the bilge over the wing keel? I found a corrigated plastic line under the starboard settee that could be the faux limber hole but it is at a higher elevation than the invert of the engine bilge. I have probed the area and found nothing.

Hi Buddy, I think I had also helped you when you needed help with a cradle.
I've tried to convince myself that oday put in limber holes...but truthfully, I'm not convinced that they really did. I do know that the water that leaks from my fresh water pump hose connections goes forward and does eventually end up in the bilge...I also know that there is a limber hole in the front center of the pan under the engine...the trouble is I don't believe O'Day connected this hole to the bilge...because the water sometimes just stands under my engine.....I can feel the hole cutout in the pan however...I think
O'day used parts between tons of models and though the engine pan limber hole might be connected to the bilge in other models, it is not in our model..
All boats should have limber holes. I know Catalinas and O'days do not, i.e. at least in their boats of our size....I think there is also a limber hole in the pan under the v-berth insert that really does flow to the bilge...Pat

Pat - thank you again. I was able to fashon a cradle with the help of your input. On the limber hole, regretfully, I have come to the same conclusion. The corrugated plastic 1" line under the starboard settee is still a mystery.

I'm glad my question on the sump pump let to this question because I had the same one but didn't really know it. I think you are correct that there are non limber holes between the engine pan and the bilge. When my wash-down hose was leaking, the water ended up in the bilge but when I had an engine coolant overflow due to broken belt, it ended up in the engine pan. Maybe this was designed this way to keep oil and coolant out of the cleaner bilge area. I ended up using the oil change pump to remove the pooled coolant.
I have a 1 inch corrugated hose starting from the top of the keel in the bilge leading to the hand bilge pump. I think I am going to forgo the extra electric bilge pump and just use the hand pump to remove any water that gathers in the bilge. Since I am fixing the leaking wash-down system, I think the bilge should remain dry. If water gathers when I am not on board the sump will carry it off the boat. I don't really like the idea of a check valve on the existing hoses and I don't want to put another hole in the boat.

Maybe what I can do is drill a hole in the sump well close to the base and put a plug in it. When I'm not on board, I could take the plug out. What do ya think?

Thanks Rajhnsn, it never occurred to me that the corrigated line was to the hand pump. I have never gotten mine to work but then there has never been much water in the bilge. I had traced the line from the pump to under the water heater and assumed that it ended up in the sump under the engine. This explanation makes sense. I may add a second pump under the engine.

As far as your question on the sump well, I would still go for a second pump. Holes through the hull as long as there is no coring would not be that big a deal for me and a second pump running in a true emergency could never be a bad thing.

Might be a bit tight to get a pump under the engine. I don't think one would fit on my boat. Good advice on the back up pump. You may be right. There are three holes on my transom now. I guess one more won't sink the boat.

Now that I think of it, I notice that a PO moved the exhaust pipe higher about 3 inches. I also notice that it is submerged while sailing and motoring. Is this a problem?

you are correct about the corregated hose being for the cock-pit hand pump. I forgot about that hose...my cockpit hose wore out...the rubber part. would not pump. I still don't think there are intentional limber holes though.

There is not room in the 272 for much of a pump under the engine...I did use a little water fountain pump (minature size) under the enginer for awhile, but it doesn't seem to leak much these days...I wonder why?
