My wife and I have decided to replace the 30 year old carpet headliner in our 272. I am wondering what sort of products people have used. Has anyone simply painted it? Or used filler resin to smooth it and then paint it? The carpet / soft products have their advantages, so I am not against them. What have you used?

Thanks!

Well, we decided on 1/4" foam-backed marine vinyl in off-white. We will use spray glue to glue it up. We have started stripping off the old hull blanket and headliner. Not really a pleasant job. At least it isn't 90 degrees out! We have decided to rebed the deck hardware with butyl rubber tape at the same time, since we have to unbolt all the deck hardware anyway.

What with a compounding and waxing, teak cleaned and oiled, new roller furler and headsail, new lines and halyards, new cushions, and new headliner, this '87 272 should be pretty proud of herself on the water. I know the other boats will be a little jealous, but we will try to keep our "Harmony" humble and well mannered!

I will include some pics along the way.

Thanks,
Andrew

Sounds like a great project. Smart move in rebedding your hardware. Be sure to use HIGH TEMPERATURE contact adhesive. I used standard trim adhesive on my oday 22 and it all came down when it warmed up. I would also plan a few teak trim stripps to be sure it stays put in difficult locations were it must be stretched into place, Check out http://www.sailrite.com/Installing-a-Foam-Backed-Headliner-in-a-Boat-Video#.U06GylVdU8E

I love these Sailrite videos. The voice over guy loves to take pot shots at the owners (who does the work in the video) short cuts and unsound safety practices.

Here are some pictures of various stages of the hull blanket / headliner removal process:

Quarterberth
Salon Port
Salon Stbd
Head Port

Some of that carpet was downright STUCK to the sides. We are alost finished removing the carpet. We are installing 1/4" foam-backed vinyl in off-white color. We are also removing all the old lighting and wiring as we go. I will rewire what is needed, and we will eventually make some nice LED lights as I have seen done here recently. We are also potting / rebedding all the deck hardware because we have had to remove every nut and washer from the salon ceiling... May as well make it RIGHT!

For an almost 30 year old boat, it has little deck leakage into the cabin. No bulkhead problems, no soft deck spots.

I will post the installation details as we go.
The supplies are:
36 yds of 1/4" foam-backed vinyl
7 cans of 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. 24 oz.

My wife estimated the supplies. We will let you know how it works out!

Thanks,
Andrew

What a project....our boat is 27 years old this spring and most of our carpet is still okay, but we've had to do some serious cleaning every couple years.....the worst area on our boat is under the cockpit floor which under the wheel is seriously under-designed and built.
I know this boat was designed by C Raymond Hunt, Assoc., but I'm relatively certain they did not address the cockpit floor with the additional loading of a wheel system.. keep sending the great attachments..and good luck with this project....Pat

Congratulations on removing interior liner and applying new vinyl ! Is the product you choose "Marine" and mold + mildew resistant? Do you have a Mfgr. name and product number? could become next season project?
Last year we were able to clean most of our 272 liner , but we will be applying a couple of cabinets and shelf starboard. May also apply an additional shelf along the port side? Need to hide the areas where cleaning did not produce "like new" look.
PS: finally warm, 75 F in Gibraltar, MI (West Basin of Lake Erie)

Yes, the product is boat upholstery:

http://greatlakesskipper.com/master...inch-foam-back-boat-vinyl-linear-yard-105633#

Nice stuff. We got it shipped to us.

I have found that projects seem to go like this:

Step 1. Order a bunch of great stuff for your boat!
Step 2. Get sweaty, dirty, and nasty tearing all the old stuff out!
Step 3. New stuff arrives in mail.
Step 4. Install new stuff in boat.
Step 5. Realize you are never gonna: a. Afford to do everything you want, and b. Get it done this season!

Oh well. We will sand the interior this weekend. Then we will start installing the new headliner.

Thanks,

Andrew

Congratulations on replacing the carpeting on your bulkheads! I did the same, with a similar vinyl replacement on my O'Day ('82) 2.5 years ago. Never having carpeting again, it was quite nasty. The vinyl is relatively easy to clean, more sanitary and looks great!

Thanks! We are excited about it, especially my wife. She says I don't notice the inside of the boat as much. I beg to differ... It is where all the stuff gets stored, right?! She teases me when I say I need to do work on-deck. "Huh? Where is that," she asks? Truly, I think it will look fantastic.

Thanks,

Andrew

Thanks agprice22 for the link & vinyl headliner idea. We planned on replacing the headliner in our '87 O'Day 272 w/carpet but will rethink that. I agree with your synopsis of the steps required! In the process of removing the headliner, I also found rot in the galley & bulkhead under the cockpit area so have had to tear it out. I've been cutting out the headliner in pieces, wondering if I use hot water on it, would it loosen it off better? Good thing this isn't my first rodeo.
