On my foredeck half way between the bow and the mast there is a kind of inverted U bolt. Then half way up the mast there is a small ring. A stay could easily be fitted between these two items. I've seen similar on an OSTAR 40' with a cutter rig but I can't see the point on a 272. Tacking would be a problem with the smaller stay compromising the jib sheets. Anyone know what this is about?

I have never owned a spinnaker, so I'm not certain what to say. Would the pole be hooked into the mast and the U-bolt serve for a downhaul/vang-type application? The U-bolt is strengthened beneath the deck with a 6"X6" plate, so it seems to be there to take a lot of stress. But I see plenty of boats with spinnakers that don't have these fittings, so even if I were to obtain a spinnaker, would these fitments be ESSENTIAL? The U-bolt is a hasard on the foredeck and if it is for a spinnaker I would prefer to remove it -- if I can do so without damage to the deck.

6X6 Steel plate? that seems to indicate ...
this ubolt is for something else ... or someone has over engineered. But in any case a number of the one designs [such as the J30] use a mid foredeck point to run a block to control the down haul on the poll, . If you can't find a reason to have it there you can take it out and fill with epoxy. If you ever need it you can just redrill. In any case, if you did decide to go spin you probably would go poleless Asm. in a sock which is easier to handle. About the only reason to use a poled spin on a 272 is if you can find a local racing fleet with high phrfs only racing class that flies spins ... not easy to find. V "Seven" 272 622
