I need to order a bimini for our 272 LE to protect us from the sun's harmful
rays. As every 272 owner can attest, the boom is rather long and low. To cut to the chase, has anyone ordered a bimini that allows the helmsman to stand
behind the wheel while using the bimini. I realize I can sit at the helmsman'
seat as alternative to standing. That said, who did you order your bimini from and do you believe they did an excellent job? Thanks, Patrick

Patrick, You cannot beat a professional design and application. However with a Hack saw, drill and rivet gun, we applied a 4 Bow Pontoon Bimini to our 272 this past summer. It does fit nicely between the rear stay and traveler lines. By reducing the length of the vertical tubes, to ensure boom clearance, plus some adjustment of the horizontal bows we are happy with the application (5'-10" head room). You do need to be careful with making sure that the storage cover will still work after the adjustment of the bows! You also need to throw the boom to Port or Starboard when opening or storing. when stored we cover and let it lay against the rear stay. It is not Sunbrella material; but works good for our needs. Our boat is a tiller, but I do stand at times. Here is the one we applied:

I added a standard bimini (from overton) to my 87 272 which I mounted on the pushpits.

There were 2 tricks:
1) These split side mounts ( http://www.sailrite.com/Split-Side-Mount-1-Stainless-Steel#.Uq4zsPTPtpA) to mount on the pushpit. $25 each
2) Have a canvas shop put in a zipper and a cutout for the backstay. The canvas guy insisted on having the cut and zipper from the side. $75 for cut, zipper and piping around cutout.

The cost of bimini depends on your choice of aluminum or stainless frame and sunbrella or not.

My wife really appreciates the bimini.

Good luck

thanks for your help....what do you mean when you say the canvas guy insisted on
having the cut and zipper from the side? so you bought a stock model from overtons?
When referring to 'pushpits' are you referring to the genoa track?

The bimini I purchase is 5 feet long and I didn't want to attach it to the coaming. I mounted the bimini to the forward sloping 'stanchion' end of the stainless steel that wraps around the rear of the cockpit. The split side mounts attach just under the lifeline loop so that the bimini is just under the boom. You can also mount it above the loop so that the bimini is above the boom.

The canvas was cut to account for the backstay to go through the bimini.

Pat, we modified our Bimini so that it would fit below the boom. It provides good headroom when sailing or motoring on those sunny hot days! Your LE may be equipped with a haul-down to trim the main, and this may reduce headroom? Our '86 - 272 has the boom swivel in a fixed (riveted) position on the mast; therefore, we do not have a haul-down. Wish I would have taken Pics before going on the hard!

I like the idea of mounting it to the stern rail. Would you be willing to send me a photo of the attachment points? Just use the email contact info under my user name.
Thanks
