My wife and I are considering buying a 270, the aft cabin looks kind of claustraphobic, especially trying to get in and out of it during the night without disturbing each other. Any one with experience or comments on sleeping in the V Berth instead of the aft cabin. I'm 5' 7 , she's 5' 3. It will be primarily the 2 of us sailing, so other people abord will not be a concern.

ken, there are two things I recommend for anyone considering a new-to-them boat:

1. Figure out how easy or hard it is to check the oil dipstick --- if it's hard to do, guess what's gonna happen...

2. Get in the berth you plan to sleep in and try it out --- only "you know for sure."

Good luck.

The roll-up dink and I used to sleep in the aft berth while the admiral occupied the peak with a piece of 2" memory foam atop the cushions. It is worth noting that we use the same sleeping arrangements in our 320 now. The admiral likes to jog and do deep knee bends while asleep and hates aft cabins even on 50' boats. I lie in one place without moving and have been accused of making loud respiratory noises while asleep.
The aft facing seat or back cushion (I forget which) fits up to extend the forepeak berth aft a little but still seems tight for 2 to me. The table can also be removed and stored under the forepeak replacing the hatch under the cushion giving you a little more room.
The current owners of our 270 report both sleeping in the aft compartment without problem. A friend who is a former football coach reports he and his wife are comfortable sleeping in the peak of their C30.
As Stu said it's so individual ya just don't know till you try.

Neither......... if you must sleep together, sleep in the main cabin on the converted table.... way, way less claustrophobic. My vee berth is like a tomb cause it's the old style with the hatch over the head. The old 27's had one or two pilot berths... not suitable for two bodies.

We have only spent a few nights on our C27 and the dinnette/ bed works for us as I am 5'10" and my wife is 5'7". We actually think the Vbirth in our 74 is more comfortable since it affords more lateral room at the shoulders and we don't mind our feet touching by the bow. I guess it depends on how you sleep. An additional matress pad is suggested in either case.

The quarter birth is the best as far as room for a single sleeper but we use that for extra sails and gear.

Kenh,
Since it seems that nobody who actually owns a 270 commented, here you go:

The doorway is a tad tight, you have to twist around to get in and out, and I am not a large person. The berth is quite comfy except that the steering gear cover is most annoying. It's in a perfect spot to prevent you from being able to roll over (if you are at the back).
The design of the 28mkii is better, in my opinion, as the doorway is removed. The steering gear cover in that design is not much better than the 270. We prefer the aft space over the bow.

Cheers
Gary
