I have a 1995 catalina with a 18 horse perkins, this weekend we backed out of the slip an as I put the transmission in forward it would not engage. Once we were under sail I went below to check the position of the gear shift, It was completly engaged but was still slipping. I checked the level in transmition and it was ok. Has anyone had this problem and have any advice.

270 Transmission slip

I have had a similar problem in my old Catalina 27 #1908 which is not relative to the C270 transmission. I have had my current boat C270 #007 for 7 years and have never had slippage or the need for adjustment of the transmission. Sorry, I have no advice to give but want to hear responses in the event I need help. Good Luck

C270 transmission slipping

Mike, I have a 1994 270 and had the same problem. I was getting excessive slippage in forward. i had to have it rebuilt, it's been fine ever since. It turns out that that transmission needs to locked in reverse when sailing to prevent wear. Ken

Ken, Thanks for the reply, did you rebuild the transmission yourself, or did you have it rebuilt. I have not been able to find anyone in this area that works on this type of transmission. If you did the work yourself, do you recall were you got the parts. Last summer the transmission started slipping and someone recomended changing the oil several times untill it came out clear. I tried this and it worked all summer with no problems, but when I tried changing it this time, I was not so lucky. How long have you owned your C270, do you race? I have owned my C270 for about five years now. My wife and I just love this boat. We race the boat Thursday nights and do fairly well. I guess it is time to slack off on the racing and tend to the boat a little more. Happy Sails Mike

C270 transmission

Mike, No, I had a marina do it. Mine started with infrequent periods of slippage then started doing it all the time. Have owned my 270 for 8 years. We use it year round here and we love the boat, both for racing and weekend excursions. Ours is a 5 foot fin keel but has not presented a problem for us yet. Ken
