First Time Buyer - looking at a 27 Cal Mk III - 1984. Looks to be in good shape, will get a survey to confirm. My question - anybody intimately aware of this boat to point out known weaknesses in design/construction. Also, how stable? Would like to venture out into open water. Any help/insight greatly appreciated.

If your Cal 27 is the "Pop top"

I raced on a Pop Top Cal 27 and noted the Pop Top brackets to be a point of weakness in the design. Explore the method of how the top is secured to the cabin in the "down" configuration, there may be modifications in different years.

water damage

Have had my 27III for three years. Other than problem caused by neglect for several years the boat was fine. The only shocker was behind the trim on the bulkhead in the main cabin. When I removed it I found the trim had trapped water leaking down the chain plate and the top of the bulkhead was rotted. As for sailing blue water I don't know as allof my sailing is on a river. I can tell you that I have raced her in 25 to 30 with a reefed main and a 135 and she did just fine. The river was a little rough but still what I would call flat. Good luck its a great boat!
