We have only used small craft until now and want to make sure we purchase enough boat to stay out of trouble. We plan on coastal cruising between Maine and New York with most of our time to be spent in Fischer's Island and Long Island sounds. Entertaining and pleasure are more important to us than speed. From readings in this forum we are leaning toward used. Suggestions please.

H'31 or H'34

Look at the H'31 or H'34 1983-1987 vintage. Lots of room and can be had in the $25-40k in very good condition. Typically will have many upgrades.

To be fair, I would look at a used Catalina 34...

You didn't mention budget...

H27

If you can't afford over 20k,you can get a H27 in the 20k range. I have a 27' Hunter 1990. Lots of room below, private head, small diesel. Nice coastal cruiser--------Good Luck

27-32' Sailboat?

If you intend to sit at a dock and entertain I would suggest you look at a powerboat. With a beamier powerboat you will have much more space for six to eight people to sit and have drinks. You also will only spend an hour or two moving from dock to dock instead of all day. More time to entertain. David H-27 Renegade

Once you say used, the possabilities are endless..

Pearson 30, J/30, Catalina 30,O'day 30,S2 9.2 (I bought a center cockpit myself),Tartan 30, Cape Dory 30...the list goes on and on and that's just in the 30 ft catagory and the price range of a Hunter 31-34. Shop hard and pick the total package that knocks your socks off. It's really fun!! Greg H23 -Faster

Used hunter

I bought a used 1976 Hunter 27 this past spring for under 6,500. It was a great and inexpensive way to start out... i have been having fun all summer w/ trips to montauk and up to nantucket. she is easy to handle w/ one person and very stable. In 2-3 yrs i will move up to something a bit larger but for now it a great place to start and to learn withut worrying about the costs of a newer boat. good luck
