Hi, I have a 2002, 260 with wheel steering (Edson) and a Honda 9.9. The carb and fule line have been worked on and the internal throttle and gear shift in the pedistool have been adjusted with the internal motor controls, they need adjusted with the motor. The motor starts and runs fine until it is slowed down for docking then at times it may speed up or stall when shifted. All is fine if I play with the throttle while shifting and apply throttle. This creates a tense cocking situation. Does anybody have similar problems or suggestions. I have had the motor adjusted, cleaned, fresh gas and most obious solutions addressed. Just looking for a solution that may have been overlooked. We dont have any local Honda mechanics.

sound like you need to adjust the idle speed and perhaps the mixture control on
both of these are done on the motor. First thing...remove the motor cover, then with the boat tied securely to the dock, push the throttle just a bit forward so that the engine doesn't quit. Next...slowly turn the mixture control on the cab in until the engine starts to die and then back it out slowly until the engine starts to die. Now...between these two settings slowly adjust the mixture control until the engine runs best. Now for the idle speed adjust. Put the engine in gear at the slowest maintainable speed and adjust the idle screw on the throttle linkage for the slowest speed the engine will sustain while shifting in and out of gear. You will be testing this by shifting in and out of forward and reverse gear, as you make this adjustment. If there is a big klunk sound as your shifting between geard you have set the idle too fast. Turning the screw clockwise usually increases idle speed. Also most linkage screws have locking nuts, so remember to retighten them. Good luck.

You may need to have your carburretor on the motor cleaned out as it sounds like being gummed up. Not sure if you are using old gas either but if so, go to new. Check spark plugs as they may be corrded. I have installed a few and it sounds like a good old tune up and carb being cleaned out may solve the problem.

Personally I like tense cocking situations. Ok, Ok, I simply couldn't resist!!! (Didya try to lace the gas with injector/carb cleaner?? Are you using high octane gas?)

Check the nut that holds the cable bracket
to the pedestal. The shift and throttle cables share a common bracket that holds the cable jackets to the pedestal. If it is loose the throttle cable may move slightly when you use the shifter. The nut that secures the bracket to the pedestal is on the back side of the pedestal gust below where the steering wheel shaft comes out. It is a 1/4" stainless nut. It may be covered with a plastic "acorn" trim piece
