260 through hull fitting leak

We commissioned a 2005 Hunter 260 on the weekend that has never seen the water and the through hull fitting under the kitchen sink started leaking, we did not notice the leak until we positioned the boat in the slip so we tried to tighten the inside bulkhead fitting while still floating and were able to slow it to a slow weep, the inside backing plate for the bulkhead fitting is ¾ thing piece of plywood and its now damp.
Now that I’m hauled out on the trailer is it as simple as taking the fitting off and putting 3M 5200 behind the metal outside hull fitting? Do I need to replace the plywood backing plate if it was only wet for 48 hours?

Thanks

Bruce

Bruce: Do not use 5200. If it leaks again, you will have one hell of a time removing the existing fitting. There are many other products that will work just fine for underwater applications.

There was a recall on some of the H260 thru hull valves that you might call Hunter for details before you bother to re-seat your org ones. They sent me new ones for my '04 260 with no hesitation. That damp backing block is no problem. Just dry it off and install your replacement valves(if they are even on the recall list).

Good luck with the new boat. Mike

Don't understand.

My through hull for the "galley" sink is above the water line. Was this changed to below water in later models?

On the starboard side of our '04 260 there's a chrome vent for the stove which is above the waterline and a thru hull galley sink drain that's a few inches down from the waterline. I suppose it could've gone either way and aside from a grey-water scunge line on the hull it might actually be better served at/above the waterline(not that I'd bother moving it either way). Slightly above is one less potential trouble maker.

Both my sink drains are above the water line on my 2002. The head intake is the only thru-hull under the water. I think that's a great improvement. Keep the hull waxed and the clean up is nothing.
