Has anyone built a rudder using carbon fibre for the 260? Any thoughts appreciated.

Just found a crack across the head of the rudder on our '04 260. I should be glad it didn't break on the water even though I carry a shorter rough one that I shaped out of a 2x12 to fit in the port lazarette as a spare. I'd be very interested in a beautiful carbon blade but it'll probably be an Ida rudder replacement that'll fit my boat budget.

You do know that the rudder housing will almost certainly need some more beef as mine was showing signs of fatigue that needed attention this year. With your big boat contacts I won't be too surprised to see a shiney new custom carbon rudder for you in the future. Good luck. Mike

I just ordered and put on an Ida rudder on my H240. It is fantastic. Pricey but worth it, also as somebody said check your rudder bracket for cracks at the weld. Mine failed last year and had to have it fixed

Very interesting! Mine cracked along the weld at exactly the same spot.

Both sides of the rudder housing cracked in the same spot and the sides were flared out considerably. I've bent them back to their normal vertical positions and re-welded the cracks but the housing is rather undersized. I suspect that the rudder places too much pressure on such a small zone of support causing the eventual stress cracks.

Sailing anywhere with the rudder in the tripped/horizontal position would be an obvious issue but the stock rudder is so long and poorly shaped that even lowered in the vertical position it places an enormous amount of pressure at the undersized head in any wind conditions beyond 15kts.

The moral.....check it now-and-then if you're an aggressive sailor.

The solution is to beef up the rudder housing a bit and build a tougher, nicely foiled blade that is well balanced. It'd seem that if time/money are tight then the slightly smaller (and nicer foiled) rudder from the link above would be better matched to the existing housing.
