I am thinking about buying a Hunter 260 with the stern rail seats, interior upgrade and a trailer. I know the the dealer is providing a service and needs to make a profit, but what is a reasonable price for a boat like this. I know in Camping trailers it is not uncommon to knock as much as 30% off. And with cars there are all sorts of places th find dealer invoice and hold back percentages, but I do not know as much about sailboats.

Not Like a Car Purchase

Don't think you can find the same info on a new Hunter that you can find on a car. Suggestions to save money: 1. Contact all the dealers in your surrounding area, not just local guy. They may offer better price or have a last year's new boat that hasn't sold yet and should be offered at a decent discount. If they are hungry for business, they might be willing to deliver to you or you can go get it. Downside on this is, you don't have local service guy who sold you boat and would be willing to fix any problem. 2. Consider buying a used 26 or 260 which will should be much less than new and a much better value. Good luck.

Dealer's Perspective

Larry' Although this forum is not designed to be on a commercial note, there are some things to consider. First, Shipping form the factory to the dealer varies with distance. Secondly, sailboats do not come put together like cars. It does take time to put them together correctly which is why commissioning is being charged. I remember when my wife first met me, she was surprised at the amount of work that had to be done to put one together. If bottom painting is being added, most folks do not realize the detailing to remove hull wax and then using the paint materials which by the way are toxic. Dewaxer uses some powerful chemincals which by the way I was told it causes cancer in labratory rats. Considering these factors and whatever other items added to the boat, you will find most dealers are fair in pricing. As to used 260's, there are none that I know of for sale since most people are keeping them as a result the steering/pedestal wheel, easier access to the transom, improved mast raising, better ventilation, etc.. I had four on my yard and they are spoken for. I have customers now on a waiting list for the 260. It is a popular boat. When comparing pricing, that is fine but remember that the dealer is only trying to make a living like anyone else. You should support your local dealer as he is the fellow who will be taking care of your boat. If you buy one in outer space and then go to the local dealer, the local dealer first responsibilty is to his customers who support him unless the dealer in outer space gets into his rocket ship and comes to earth to service the boat he sold to you. There are some like that. Enough said. Go get your 260 or you may be waiting till summer. Dave Condon

look around

I picked up a sweet 22 last summer for $1800, after looking at a really nice H27 for $6000 (just a little to much $$$at the time). There are some tremendous deals out there, especially when someones new boat arrives soon and they still hane't sold their old one.
