I am looking at a 1999 Hunter 260. The keel has been whacked some how. The bottom of the keel has been peeled away exposing the foam. It looks like a reasonable repair, refilling with foam and appropriately fiber glassing over. Any problems I am not seeing? Comments please.

What is the moisture content of the foam? That's important to know, the keel could need repairs ranging from complete replacement to just minor touch up, you need to know how much water got in the foam.

Brad, Thanks for the reply. The owner has no idea when it occured, but the boat has been out of the water for at least 8 months.

In that case I think its very important to test the water content of the foam within the keel. If you just patch it up and it turns out there is moisture in the foam you will have wasted your time and the repairs won't hold. If you take the extra time to do it right you'll have a much stronger keel repair and I don't think it will add a significant amount of time to the process.
Good luck & enjoy your new boat!

make sure yu get the right shape because if it is the part that goes into the centerboard well housing or trunk housing, it could become stuck and that was not an easy job to repair that.

Send me a photo to davecondon@mindspring.com so I can see what you are talking about.
