26 vs 260 weight?

Considering going bigger…..selling our 23.5 and buying a 26 or 260.

Trying to figure out why the 260 weighs 400 lbs. more than the 26? Seems identical…..

The extra weight doesn’t sound like much, but we are getting close to maxing out our car’s towing limits.

Also, does anyone know the weight of a standard Hunter trailer for these boats?

Wikipedia shows the Hunter 26 at 4600 lbs displacement and the Hunter 260 at 5000 lbs. SailboatData.com shows the same.

Also, has anyone actually WEIGHED their 26 or 260 at a scale? Dealer weights are not always accurate, I have learned….

I suspect it is a lot of little things, the mast is a bit higher, the boat is longer, the transom is different, the sail area is higher, and perhaps a different fiberglass layup. A pound here, a pound there and pretty soon we're talking about a lot of weight.

The weights listed are designed weights and represents the designer's best guess as to the finished weight. On had laid boats it is easy to add some extra weight if extra resin is used.

I thought the hulls were identical….but now I see the slight difference. Thanks for noticing that…

Also keep in mind the displacement weights shown there include the weight of the water ballast which you will be leaving at the ramp. This amounts to approximately 2000lbs

So the 260 might have larger water tanks? Adding 20 gallons would account for 160 lbs.

26 I believe had jugs or a flexible bladder for drinking water under galley sink while the 260 has a large poly tank in the bow for 20gal.

The brochure for the 26 from Hunter lists the same 5000lb displacement as the 260. So could just be a discrepancy in sailboat data’s info. Also most given weights are dry weights - exclusive of weight of engine, fuel, potable water, provisions etc.

I was referring to the water ballast tanks. In the end, it could be any number of things accounting for the weight difference and perhaps someone actually weighed the 26 and learned it was 400 lbs over design weight.

There were discrepancies about the weights but I worked with engineering as a dealer. The original plans and first manual did show a displacement for the 26 at 4700 lbs which included 2000 lbs for water ballast. This does not include motor and personal gear.

The 260 was upgraded which added weight which included:
1. Redesign of cockpit floor for wheel
steering
2. Redesign of transom boarding ladder
3. Redesign of forward deck hatch

Displacement for the 260 is 5000 lbs which does not include motor and personal gear. The 5000 lbs includes the 2000 lbs water ballast.

If anyone who owns the Hunter 26 trailer please advise actual weight of trailer. Anyone with a Magic Tilt trailer, please advise empty weight or actual weight of the trailer as the Magic Tilt trailer weighs more

Thanks for all the replies. Crazy Dave in particular.

I own a lovely 23.5. If I can find a scale to use I will weigh it and post that. Would be nice to know. I am also trying to realize what and how vehicle limits are determined. Trying to be safe and tow within limits.

Re: weight. Perhaps consider the H260's wheel steering - believe this was standard and the H26 optional? Pedestal and cables probably add a bit?

@massnspace We own a tiller H260. Water tank is nice but biggest benefit has been the stern access for swimming and stepping out while beached. Love to back in while cruising.

Couple of wash tubs to rinse your feet and the boat is happy.

Re: trailing: Both have really high freeboards (allowing for that good cabin living space) and A LOT of windage. No unusual for us to trail 1,500 miles for an extended trip. Crosswinds over 25 mph would rock (move) our old F250. Not really a deal with the dually. (A hitch equalizer would help - Mrs Snow purchased one as she hates crosswinds, but I never installed - would sell if interested).

Good info here. Towing the Hunter 260 Sailboat (h260.com)

You did not mention your vehicle but - if 400lbs is a concern you could be under gunned for long tows.

Have fun - H26-260 water ballasted sailing (traveling at 65mph) & camping opens up a lot of accessible cruising unavailable with bigger boats. (Got a freezer on our dream list but that would be an expensive retrofit. :waycool:)

@h2o_snow

The 260 wheel steering was an option that I recommended to Hunter when it was being designed as consumers wanted it. The cockpit floor had to be strengthened for the 260 to keep the floor from flexing. The tiller needed a straight floor. Thus the 260 had two floors one straight for tiller and the other beefed up with a raised platform for the wheel steering.

The 26 did not have a wheel option except for dealer install as there were many issues to overcome. I knew the first dealer who tried to install wheel steering on a 26 who sought me out at a dealer meeting as he ran into problems. When I got home, mark and I started designing a workable solution. It did call for parts to be made. I took a 26 to Annapolis with an Edson wheel steering which was a hit selling the 26: Warren Luhrs who owned Hunter along with Edson engineers looked at what I had done. I suggested a new style 26 to include other suggestions from me. Thus the 260 was borne. Never accepted a single cent from Hunter Marine as my philosophy was to give back to the sailing community.
