one of the earlier owners added an extension to the stern and moved the back stay approx 20" off the stern giving more cockpit room. I added a fishfinder for a depth meter, this one has a 120 degree provection and shows me the bottom contor not just the depth. i mounted the transduce in the bow to get en "early" picture of the bottom.... this works REAL well. I added a mast plate and moved all the line blocks to it so I can reduce the leaks in that area.

I'd be interested in seeing how the backstay was moved 20" of the stern.
Where did you mount the fishfinder?

Would you post a picture of that stern backstay bracket for us?

look at the Oday 26 mod section... I posted a couple of pictures there, or email me and I will send you several pictures.
I mounted the fish finder in the companion door starbard side. I made a mount so I can swing it out of the way or to viewing position and it locks in place with a pin. This week I will take a couple jpg's of the mount and psoition. I really like this device, I can SEE the bottom coming up or down BEFORE I get there. KDSSAIL@HOTMAIL.COM

I moved my battery from the "in the way" spot just aft of the rear bulkhead (i.e) just inside the access area to the hold under the cockpit) to a plank i mounted athwartships as shown.I also added a second battery and 2 bank charger. then i put a small tool box in the old battery spot. It is a handy spot for tools, extra winch handle, fasteners, etc.
the other thing i did was cut the cover to that little box under the gangway steps in half and put a hing there. Now it is way easier to open and access or remove.
And i put a foot pump in the galley sink, i like it so much i am going to put one in the forward sink this winter.

Speaking of "hands free water"; I installed a windshield wiper pump on my sink in my old Precision 23. I ran it to an on/off switch at the sink. I also put a shut off valve in line with the sink so that I could adjust the flow of water where I wanted it to stay. With a touch of the switch I had running water, worked great.

I added an EAGLE fish finder for a depth meter. It works great...I get a display of the bottom not just a depth reading and I can see the bottom coming UP or going down. This one gives a 120 degree sounding for a better forward display and earlier warning to me. It mounts on a swing device (prototype #2) so its out of the way when I do not care to see it or OUT when I DO want so see the display.

Wow, that stern bracket is really sharp looking! That's a real nice mod. Thank you for sharing this.

25 and 26 owners- what modes have you made to your boats to make them better?

Pictures?

John
John,
I think that one of the first mods that I would do on the O'Day 25 or 26 is to build a temporary mast attachment or yoke for attaching temporary stabilizer stays for mast raising/lowering. Normally, some of the O'Day 25s and 26s came with stainless steel triangular plates built into the stays on each side of the boat to be used in conjunction with a set of bridles that attach to the back of the boom. The boom is used as a Gin Pole and the bridles keep the boom centered. Another set of bridles(baby stays) can be made up of ordinary braid line with snap hooks to connect to these plates and the mast yoke. This would provide more lateral stability for the mast in the raising/lowering process.
The yoke can be made of any type of strong wood. I chose white oak for mine. My friend Wayne came up with this idea and he built his yoke to fit the mast very snug with a bolt and special nut to tighten it and keep it from slipping down the mast. Mine has a hinge with an adjuster bolt and wing nut. Both mast yokes have eye bolts for attaching the baby stays. If your O'Day 25 does not have these triangular plates and a lot of them don't, you can make up a set of pivot bridles and connect them to a small shackle between the turnbuckle toggles on each side of the boat. You would also need to install a small pad eye on each side of the deck to connect the other end of each pivot bridle.
It seems like a lot of work to go through but it's well worth it if you have a roller furler connected to your mast which not only adds more weight to it, but can cause the mast to go over the side if it's not handled carefully in the mast raising/lowering process. Here's some pics of both mast yokes, bridles, and baby stays. The first pic shows two of Wayne's mast yokes. The one on the left is for the baby stays, and the one on the right is for his Gin Pole attachment near the bottom of the mast. The last three pics is of my set up. So far, I've tried three different ways to attach my baby stays to my mast and I've found the wooden mast yoke to be the fastest and easiest of all three. If you have questions just fire away.

Nice set up on the mast raising system. On my 23 I used an "A" frame that worked well. It was built of 1" conduit. Now if I can just find a 25;-).

"A" frames work great and they have excellent stability for mast raising. I'm sure that you'll find a 25 down there soon. You should keep your sights raised and try to buy a boat that has everything you want including the inboard diesel. Good luck!

here is a good assist device for mast up..down . This is the 3rd one I've build; Oday 22. Catalina 25, Oday 26. The pole goes in the Gudgeon Pintles and the small "O" ring you attach a line to a cleat on each side to help with the rear loading when you push the mast back towards the stern. To Step UP you place the mast in the crutch and slide forward to the 1st pin location..1st pin goes in. ( this height also keeps the mast high enough so the vang claw will not poke a hole in your top). At this position the mast is ALMOST up to its sweet spot where it's past the heavy part and a whole lot easier to push up after this point. With a couple of helpers it fairly easy job. Push all the way up and secure the 2nd pin... then the forestay and sides. When lifting or dropping if you tie a line to the bottom of the forestay then lead it forward to the pulpit and wrap it around the bow pulpit 2 times and give to a helper, it makes a great break to help hold the mast and keeps it from falling if someone slips.
In a mast down you undo the for and tie the line to it ( wrapped 2 times around pulpit) remove front pin, side stays and start pushing back. the safety person feed line and helps control the down speed while the main people guide the mast down. Lower mast into the crutch the undo rear pin and lift mast and roll it forward to the bow, lift out of crutch and place on rear pulpit.
I know this sound long, and I am not a great typist but I am sure that you and decipher the info. The pole in approx head high or a little higher when you are IN the cockpit. The tabs on each side of the roller look long but they keep ALL the shrouds and lines together and keeps it all from falling off the roller. Questions please email me. Dave

Dave,
I had something similar to that for a cat boat that I used to own years ago. I never thought of putting a roller in it back then though. I remember having to lift the mast on my 222 and walk it back to the cockpit and stick it in the crutch. I don't think I could do that today at my age without tripping.
