Hola, Thanks to all of you who helped with my interior questions! Now i am wondering if anyone has information or has tried using a 25 horse kicker on the 76 OD.. I have used an 8 in the past. However, we have extremely strong tidal flow up here and often I am reduced to a snails pace. I have reinforced the transom with sheet metal and am aware of the displacement hull speed. I would like to hear from anyone who has tried a larger engine or knows of someone who has. Thanks in advance. -dc

I belive you are referring to an O'Day 25, but even with a larger outboard powered sailboat, a 25hp is excessive. When I was a mechanic in a boatyard, I installed a 25hp on a Catalina 25, as per the customer's insistance. It was rediculous. It made the boat list all the time. He wanted to "go faster." He got rid of it shortly afterwards. Your hullspeed will still only be what it is. The MacGregor 25 was usually equipped with a 25hp and is shown pulling a skier in the brochures, but the boat is very light, and will plane. Try a new 9.9 High Thrust. I have a 2005 Yamaha 9.9 four-stroke, high-thrust on my O'Day 25. I've never been past 1/3 throttle. It's very "thrusty." You will love the ease of use, quietness, and smoothness of this motor. It only weighs about 110 lbs. A 25hp weighs 190 lbs. I love my 9.9.

I have an older 9.9 on my O'Day 25. Because I seldom use it, my biggest "problem" is overcoming the weight distribution. If you put a 25hp motor on your boat, consider the extra weight you're adding, and the fact that you're adding it to one side. If I were replacing it with a new motor, I'd look specifically at the option Steve mentioned. Newer motor, designed to give more thrust. 15hp is probably the max you would EVER want on a O'Day 25, but even that, I think, would be too heavy.

props and charging
Steve aand others which prop are you using? Also, does the Yamaha have a charging system for your onboard systems. My Honda used to. thanks!

Thrust
The Yamaha T9.9 comes with a "High-Thrust" prop. It works well. I'm not sure of the pitch or details. The electric start version, which I think they all are, has an alternator. I only have one battery, and it never went low on me with about 30 minutes of low rpm running with each sail. The link I gave earlier gives all the specs.

I don't know much about motors. I put a higher power prop on my 25 h.p. fishing boat. I would think someone makes different pitch props for most engines. Couldn't one just get a prop for their honda, tohatsu or 'lower thrust' yamaha etc without buying yamaha high thrust engine?

You can't create horsepower by changing props. The Yamaha High-Thrust motors have different gearing to turn their high-thrust prop.

Repowering a 25' O'Day ???
I lost my OMC inboard several years ago and I discarded all parts due to expense to replace and installed an OB on the Starbord side of the Transom. I am wondering if anyone has placed another ob inside where the saildrive was?? I know that it is below the waterline, but I am sure the must be a dozen ways to deal with that?? I have a couple of ideas in mind, but I will need to cut away the filler I placed in the hole for the old saildrive.. wild question?? maybe?? Charlie

I have seen a new setup using a Honda powerhead and a saildrive type lower unit for mounting through the bottom. I think I saw it advertised in Good Old Boat or Boatworks, but it wasn't cheap. While the outboard on a bracket may not be the most beautiful way to power your boat, it is simple and easy to deal with.
