I just sold my 1981 oday 25cb which was my first boat. It was a fine boat but my only issue was that I did not have a trailer and even if I did my nissan xterra (5000lb limit) wouldnt be able to tug her..I would really like to store the boat in my yard for the off season and save on marina fees..So I have calculated that a 23ft boat would be the biggest boat that my truck could haul and so that is what I am looking for now..My list of boats are oday 23, precision 23, compac 23 and if I saw a great condition oday 222 with bells and whistles I would also consider that as well..It will probably take some getting used to the smaller cabin space after getting comfortable with the 25 but my fatter wallet will probably help me cope with that..Does anybody have any suggestions or advice on these boats? any other 23s out there that I should add to the list? I really like the stub keel/centerboards..I think a precision 23 would probably be my first choice because the company is still in business and I really like the inside airy feel. I also heard that they used foam instead of wood as there sandwich material between the glass which would eliminate any rotting/delamination problems.On the flipside they only started making these in the late 80s which would probably end up being more expensive than lets say an oday 23...

It has a BIG cockpit and has a feel of a big boat. My friend with a j35 could not believe, it was only a 23 ft boat. I didn't like the way "they" set up the mainsheet, so I re-rigged it to mid-boom sheeting style - much better.
It is true about the foam - one of the reasons I wanted to get a P23 - no core rotting issue. My 4Runner pulls it easily...BUT...I cant keep 2 boats...will be putting it on the market in the Spring...I'm torn...:neutral:

The towing weight of an Oday 23 is 3100 lbs., minimum. Throw in a trailer, outboard, sails and other crap, and you are at close to 4000 lbs.
In any case, I like your list of potential boats. One other to consider, especially if you like the keel/centerboard set up of the Oday (and I do too) is the Rhodes 22. Its a really well thought out little cruiser. I noticed you left the Catalina 22 off your list. While I agree with you that the keel/centerboard option is better than the swing keel of the C-22, there are just too many of the little buggers out there to ignore. The full inventory keeps the price down, and the pop-top cabin could be a way for you to avoid the smaller cabin blues. Great support from the manufacturer, an active owner's association, etc. Don't get me wrong, I like the Oday 23 better, but the C-22 might be a good option to consider.

You say you have a forerunner 5000 lbs capacity I dont believe your Oday 25 displaced more than 4500 I think what you needed was a trailer not a smaller boat . Ive got a pearson 26 weekender fin keel 5200 lbs displacement with a trailer I tow it to the harbor in
the spring and back to my yard in the fall. I have a 6 cyl jeep rated for 5000 lbs. no problems most of these car tow capacities are on the low side. I have a friend with a seafarer 25

I do feel a little regretful about selling it but I think in the long run and in this stage in my life a slightly smaller boat will be better for me. I very well may just move the boat twice a year but I like the freedom that the trailer provides..who knows, maybe I will take it to lake george for a change of cruising grounds, or maybe Ill pull it out if a storm threatens it..I just like the idea of a trailer..and yes my truck could have probably handled the 25 but I dont like the idea of overloading my truck..not to mention that buying a trailer or even buying a used powerboat trailer and converting is quite pricey when you need that much weight capacity..So my eyes are peeled and Im scouring craigslist like a mad dog for something nice..hopefully I could find a precision 23...Did every year model of the precision 23 come with the foam core or after a certain year??thanks for the replies
Just this summer I did the same thing. I sold my Coronado 25 in March because I was tired of being lake locked and wanted something I could take around the country. An elderly man at my church sold me his Macgregor V222 on a trailer with 5 sails for $800. It took a lot of sweat equity and about $1200 but it is now a presentable boat.
Before I sold my bigger boat I once chartered (2007) a Rhodes 22 out in the Albemarle for a 4 day cruise. Loved it. Fantastic, stout little boat. So I can concur with HukilauMike. They are $40K new. I still have 4 kids to put through college ... so a Rhodes was out of the question. But even my wife loved it and she keeps a picture of it as her computer wall paper. So if you can afford it, I'd take a look at one. The one I chartered had a true head, galley, electric lift for the OB, roller furled in-mast main and roller head sail etc etc. Very tricked out little cruiser.
I now own a MacGregor V222 ... which is a very low budget boat. You can cruise in it but it is more like camping. I think that may be below your quality level but if not you can pick them up very cheap. The older Mac 25s are nice trailerable boats and give your a bit more interior room. The newer Macs are not really sailboats anymore and last.....I once owned a Coronado 23. The Coronado cabin goes the full width of the beam making it much roomier than you might expect inside (wish I never sold that boat). I once got mine to 9 kph and still had the windows above the water ... They are easy to launch and sail and you can tow them with a Ford Ranger.
Odays and Catalinas I have no first hand experience with other than day sails with friends.

thanks for the tips on the rhodes 22..That is one awesome looking boat..when did they start making them..is it possible to find an older one for cheaper..my budget is 7000 tops..I would be much more comfortable buying something for 4-5000..????
Here's a vote for the Compac 23. I have owned mine for two seasons and love it. The company is still in business and the owners answer the phone if you have any questions about your boat. Great people to deal with.
I tow mine with a V6 4Runner with no problem. I wouldn't tow it very far as the 4Runner has no transmission cooler but twice a year for a few miles is fine. Good luck with your search.

Wow just when I think I found the perfect next boat another one comes along..Just from reviews and googling, my new list of boats I am looking for in order of preference is- rhodes 22, precision 23, compac 23, oday 23...the rhodes is a 22 compared to the others but with the pop top and huge cockpit I doubt it will feel like one..Im just curious about one thing..were all the rhodes 22 built the same or were they changed over the years..excluding minor stuff..I was reading something on the rhodes 22 that was talking about so many different features..example-standing headroom once you open the hatch to use the potty, foam core, ovens, etc etc...was that article talking about a brand new rhodes 22??if I buy an 80s era will it have all these things..
Sorry... I don't know the answer to that. The one I chartered was the demo model the owner takes to the boat shows... so it was tricked out. The owner is an older man... mechanical engineer turned boat smith. He is a nice guy. Offered the use of the factory guest house so we would not have to rent a room and charged us only $380 for the three day weekend. I did not take him up on the guest house but the boat was a dream. The head sits next to the galley with a folding (accordion) door that hides it. When you want to use the head you unfold the door and the base fits into a grove that creates a room for privacy. You open the hatch and the top of your head pokes above the deck. Kind of funny but very sensible. A perfect little cruiser for two people and a kid. We had 6 people on the boat and managed but it was a tight sleeping arrangement. I slept in the cockpit and just got wet when it rained.

If you are open minded about water ballast maybe consider a water ballast boat like the 26 foot Mac Classics's or Hunters. Light on the trailer and easy to launch and yet have some room inside if you want to stay out longer. A lot of these are sailed single handed.

After doing some research I found out that the compac 23 does not have a centerboard..just a shoal keel..not sure I like this too much and your pointing ability will suffer I imagine..so I am going to scratch that off my list...so my list is downt to 3....the precision 23, oday 23, and rhodes 22...with a trailer...not seeing too many options out there...but I guess I have to be a little patient..there are plenty of oday 23s but all without trailer

I don't think so. One thing about the Rhodes 22 is that the features have been added over the years. It's not like they change every year, but if you go back far enough, you will notice differences. One that I remember had to do with that funky folding head door; I got the impression that was a new feature when I first saw the boat back in the early '90s.
They are really neat boats, and they fill a niche. But they are hard to find used. General Boats is a small company, and they don't make that many to start with. Couple that with the fact that most people who are willing to spend 35 or 40K on a new boat want something bigger than a 22, and you further limit the market. Tag on to all of this that a used one in good shape still commands a price that is equivalent to a new Catalina 22, and you have a pretty stagnant used market. I just did a quick search on Yachtworld, and there was only one Rhodes 22 listed. The price was listed in the high 20's. General Boats does buy back boats and reconditions them for resale, but there are no bargains to be had there. I do remember that at one point, General Boats was offering to sell a much older model unreconditioned for a much lower price than I was used to seeing. Maybe that option is still available sometimes.
I wish you luck in finding one you can afford; they are really great boats. If you can't, I think you will be happy with any of your other choices.
