I find thhe 240 to be very slow going downwind. Due to the shrouds being swept back so far. I will get a wisker pole to wing out the jib. Does anybody have any other suggestions/ideas ?

Broad Reach

I noticed the same thing. The boat just like most boats is much faster on a broad reach than a run and if I am in a hurry, I just jibe back in forth on a broad reach instead of directly downwind. I am also considering a spinaker, but even then the broad reach is faster. Enjoy! Dan Busche '99 h240

Downwind

I have been racing my 240 all summer and have learned a couple of things. One, in light air, downwind, let the sails out, and let them flap. Two, pull the jib sheet out of the block, and hold it outside of the shrouds, wing and wing works great this way and is very fast. I want a wisker pole, but they are too expensive. Rhudson@aol.com

Inexspensive Whisker Pole

I have a 1994 23.5 and it does pretty good down wind. Running directly before the wind makes it really hard to judge performance as the apparent wind speed is lowest at this point. Anyhow, I don't think there is a need to shell out big money for a whisker pole. What we use on the ElseWhere is an extendable boathook. The hook end has a little ball on the end of it that just passes through clew. The other end of the boathook has a soft rubber grip that snugs up against the mast. A short length of line is used to lash the boathook to the mast so that the butt end can not fall. We have been using the boathook / whisker pole for about three years. We used a perment marker to mark the extendable part of the pole. This lets us rig the pole quiet quickly. Al Beattie

UP KEEL

To gain about .5 knot, remeber to raise the swing keel, even on broad reaches, judge if you need more keel on a point of sail by how much leeway you make. The only problem with raising the keel is remembering to put it down when you head up.

Whisker pole and downwind ...

I purchased a $29 kit to add a quick-release snap to the end of my boat hook and put a ring on the mast and it works great! Also ... I bring the keel up whenever we're running home and it's amazing how much speed you gain.

TRAVELLER

I NOTICED AT THE MICHIGAN CITY BOAT SHOW THAT THE HUNTER 240 AND 260 DO NOT HAVE TRAVELLERS. HOW DOES THIS AFFECT SAILING?
