Hey all. I have a O'Day a 23-2 that I sail out of Sausalito, CA. I have been out in light winds all the way up to mid twenties gusting up to 30 kts.
For the community and for myself, I'd like to record here what sail combinations people might use for the different wind combinations for this boat. I also just got an anemometer. I will try to remember to update this thread as I learn more about the combinations.
My sail setup:
Oversize 135% roller furling Genoa, Oversize 3 reef main, small emergency jib from a 15 footer (not used yet... Wondering if it might make sense to Hank on to a jib halyard and set behind the jib like a staysail in heavy winds). My question marks demote my lack of confidence in the data so far.
Steady Wind speed (with little gusts)
0-9(?)kts, full main and Genoa
10-12? 1st reefed main, full Genoa?
12-14? reduce to 80% Genoa
15-17? Second reef in main, 50% Genoa
18-22? Second reef in main, no Genoa or only a flag size
?23-28 3rd reef in main only
?29+ bare poles (boat has a lot of windage)
Notes on these numbers: I have only sailed once with the anemometer and I was with other people so was wanting to take things easy. The winds were steady at 14 to 15 knots, and I was at the first reef but probably 50 or 60% headsail. I tend to reef the headsail more than would be optimal for the sail shape and combination since it's so easy to reef. My main is easy to reef too with single line reefing that I have set up, but single-handed and with the amount of traffic in the bay some days, I take the shortcut. The Oday really likes a reefed main rather than a reefed headsail because it rounds up so easily.
The fastest steady winds that I have been out in has been about 20-22kts, with gusts up to 28 knots. Anything beyond that is a guess. Note that in have reinforced this boat substantially.
What are your sail combinations, or weather parameters to decide to go out? I am not excited getting out of the marina solo on 15+kt days
