23 Mast on a 22, How much does size count?

I have a mast for sale from a 77 O'Day 23 and a guy with and O'Day 22 wants to buy it. He asked me if, to my knowledge, it fits, so I'm asking you guys (and ladies):Liar:. It's 31' long and appears to be the original mast that came with the boat, but I didn't buy the boat new and can't swear to it. See the pictures. Thanks All!!!

The mast on my 1975 Oday 22 measures 22 feet 6 inches. However my mast is not the original mast as it is not anodized gold.

Early 22s had 600 pounds ballast and went up from there.

The boat would have an extra 8 1/2 feet of mast over the stock sails.

More sail would definitely overpower the boat.

The mast could be cut down to size. The mast step should un-bolt allowing the bottom to be cut. Then adjust the rest of the gear, spreaders, wiring, halyard exits, to accommodate. Use the standing rigging from the 22 or build new.

If I needed a mast for my boat and the price was right I would consider project.

The mast can be cut to length. All he needs is a compound Miter saw with a carbide tip blade on it. That's what my son used to cut my mast two years ago. You just need to make a nice square cut.

The 23 had a larger extrusion size than the 22, so even cut down to the correct length, it will be heavier. I suspect that by the time you cut the mast to the correct length, replace the maststep/hinge, plus any other incidentals..... you could purchase a bare extrusion of the correct size and length and use the original fittings...and not have spent more than hte cost of reworking the 23 mast. Even if you needed to replace some of the fittings from the old mast, it still may be less expensive (or at least easier?) to obtain the correct extrusion form DWYER or another mast builder, also check with Rudy at D&R Marine.
