23 Bimini & Sail Recut

I want to install a bimini (and possibly a dodger) on a Hunter 23 (NOT 23.5), ergo my question is twofold; 1.) Where do I order the canvas products? 2.) I assume that the sail must be recut to accomodate the bimini. The current sail plan has the foot decending at an angle below parallel (normal, according to the factory), thus leaving no room below the boom. Can the loft merely cut the leach at a 90 degree angle from the goosneck, or do I need to mark it myself. Has anyone had this done, and by whom? I understand that performance will suffer, but I am more interested in comfort than speed..pointing etc. I do know that Hunter does not advise re-positioning the boom higher on the mast (thus raising the sail plan) due to inherent instability that WILL result, so tht is out of the question. Any input is appreciated and thanks in advance!

bimini

Many years ago, a customer of mine did just that, cutting the sail and raising the boom. Performance and pointing ability did suffer. What about a short bimini angled downward. Check with the HOW store on this site to see if they can help you with the canvas. Any modifications to the boom and mainsail will hurt the resale of the boat. Also, do not recommend a dodger for this one. You will be putting too much money into this boat. craxy Dave Condon

Had Bimini installed on my 23.5

Several years ago I had a Bimini installed on my 23.5 and had the boom raised and the sail shorted. I did this for two reasons, one it was just too hot in the summertime with the sun baking us, and two (the more important reason) I had two spots of Basil (sp?) cell skin cancer remove from my scalp. I was at a local boat show, so I shopped around around. They came out to my boat, measured and then went away for the winter to make it. They came back in the spring, Installed it, we raise the boom, they marked the main, took it away, and recut it for me. (They were also sailmakers) While it was expensive, it made sailing much more enjoyable.

Ameriseam

Check with Ameriseam. 800-755-7221, if this number is incorrect, check the Archives. Installed on my H23, did not have to raise boom or recut sail. Can sail with the Bimini up. Very easy to install. My wife burns easily, now she enjoys sailing in the hot sun. Randy Wheeler "Rapuzha"

Did they have the design plans already, and does your boom droop?

Had Sail recut and Installed Sun Shade

Dan, I installed a 3 bow Bimini (Boat US, but most marine supply catalogs have something similar) on my H23. If I adjusted the Bimini low enough to clear the boom, I didn't have headroom. I had a local sailmaker recut the main to raise the clew end 15" and install a 2nd pair of reef points. I suppose that I may have lost some performance, but I sail for my enjoyment. The Bimini was about $225 and the Sail work was about $125. Well worth it. I had to poke two holes in the Bimini for the Backstays to go through. Regards, Jerry

For Dan

They had the design plans already on file. I understand that they used to produce canvas products for Hunter. I keep a topping lift on the boom, The bimini only clears by about 5 inches, You have to swing the boom out to raise or lower the bimini. I had to assemble the bows, they came in three parts, to be pop rivited. I installed the entire bimini in about 45 minutes. Very good instructions. I will try to get a picture of it in a week or so., Marina is 90 miles away and the lake still has ice. Randy

Good news and bad news

The good news: the bimini on my 88 H23 fits under the stock boom and mainsail, has plenty of headroom for my 6'2", clears the split backstay and the dark blue fabric matches the trim stripes on the boat. The bad news: I have no idea who made it (it came with the boat when I bought from the previus owner). I'll check it next time I go to the boat and see if there's a label. Peter S/V Raven
