Storm Jib

My buddy and I got 60% jibs built they work great we use them alot because our winds are 25+ knots alot of the time.

You Bet!

My dealer talked me out of a furler and into a storm jib. A storm jib is cut higher off the deck so it won't catch a big "bag" of water if a big one breaks over the bow. I haven't used it very much but it's the ideal mate for a reefed mainsail. It'll trim out so the rudder is neutral. My sail loft had all the dimensions in their book. It's made of much stiffer cloth than the stock jib. You do still have to go forward and hank it on and that can be exciting in a brisk wind. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Roller furling

Most of the time, you can obtain a storm jib type sail with the roller furling. Some systems do not allow you to raise the sail off the deck much and as a result, the life line interfers with the jib. I have virtually put CDI or the Flexible furler systems on the 23.5 and 240 with success which will allow me to raise the sail off the deck as well. All the folks that use the CDI system will agree that it does work and in fact , I have furled the jib into a storm sail configuration many times and it works. Based on experience since the introduction of the 23.5 on 8/15/92

Roller Furling too

I personally like the idea of NOT going forward in adverse conditions – having all control lines brought back to the cockpit and a roller furling are the only way to do that I’m aware of. While it’s true that the jib is somewhat flattened out when rolled part way in, that’s not much concern to me when the wind is brisk. As a side note – the jib on a roller furling will raise somewhat when rolled as well.

Storm Jib

I use A old sail from a Snipe, or Lido 14, some other small boat JIB. This works well for me ,But I also dont go out in winds over 25mph. Something tells me that the 23.5 boat is not made for BIG winds !!! What do you think?? Do you think these boats are made for 40 mph. wind?? Dave B.
